What is the Immune System

• Network of cells tissues and organs that work
  together to defend the body against attacks from
  bacteria and microbes
• Primary function is to distinguish between self
  and non self (foreign)

Components of immune system

• Thymus
• Spleen
• Lymph system
• Bone marrow
• Antibodies

Descriptions

• Thymus-It is responsible for producing T-cells
• Fact-without a thymus a baby's immune system
  collapses and the baby will die.
• Spleen-The spleen filters the blood looking for
  foreign cells
• Fact- A person w/o a spleen will be more sick
  than a person with one.
• Bone marrow- Produce new blood cells both red and
  white.

Why is it Important

• Defend body against millions os bacteria,
  microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites
• Keeps us from getting sick
• When immune system totally fails, you die

Immune disease

• Asthma-Asthma affects more than 5 of the
  population of the US, including children. It is a
  chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways
  characterized by coughing, shortness of breath,
  and chest tightness. A variety of "triggers" may
  initiate or worsen an asthma attack, including
  viral respiratory infections, exercise, and
  exposure to irritants such as tobacco smoke.
