What was the Emancipation Proclamation

• Preliminary proclamation issued 22nd Sept 1862
• Freed all slaves who were in Confederate states
  fighting against the Union
• Did not free all slaves! Was very limited.

The Souths Response

• Lincoln gave the South till January 1, 1863 to
  respond.
• If they accepted then they could keep their
  slaves and the war would end.
• If they refused the slaves in the rebelling
  states would be set free
• What do you think the Souths response was?

The Battle of Antietam and the Emancipation
Proclamation

• Battle of Antietam-the bloodiest one-day battle
  of the Civil War.
• After a string of Confederate victories, Lee
  wanted to bring the war North. Hoping to keep
  the French and British out of the war.
• After the Battle of Antietam Lincoln issued the
  Emancipation Proclamation, Sept. 22, 1862.

Battle of Gettysburg

• Turning point of the war
• South had been winning so Lee wanted to bring the
  war North.
• 3 day battle
• North wins southern forces outnumbered.
• South retreats never to invade the North again.
• After this battle, Lincoln gives his Gettysburg
  Address.
