The Spanish Conspiracy

• General James Wilkinson
• Former American Revolution general
• Moved to Kentucky following the war
• Wilkinson came to New Orleans and swore
  allegiance to Miro Spain
• He tried to get Kentucky to join the Spanish
• This failed Kentucky became a state.

The Acadians

• French speaking Catholic colonists who lived in
  the Canadian province of Acadia
• England gained control of Acadia
• The English Acadians did not get along
• England worried about rebellion

• The Great Upheaval
• The English call all the Acadians for a town
  meeting
• NOT a town meeting but a secret plot and English
  soldiers forced them on boats deported them
• They lost everything!
• No one wanted them!
• Mostly uneducated farmers trappers

The Acadians Come to Louisiana

• Acadians spent years in exile
• Spanish were trying to populate the new colony
• Acadians knew how to farm trap so they would
  probably adjust well in Louisiana.
• Spanish offered to pay their way
• 1769 to 1785 almost 10,000 Acadians came to
  Louisiana
• Settled in SW Louisiana near Bayou Teche

Acadians Cajuns

• Over the years Acadian is changed to Cajun
• A Cajun is technically someone who is descended
  from the Acadians in Canada

The New Orleans Fires 1788 1794

• Good Friday 1788
• Priest the candle
• Church bells usually used / Easter remained
  silent
• Over 850 buildings destroyed included The Cabildo
  and St. Louis Cathedral
• The Next Six Years 1789 1785
• Another fire 3 hurricanes destroy New Orleans
• Children and hay
• Governor Carondelet rebuilt the city with Spanish
  architecture and brick had to be used for
  buildings over 1 story.
• Most of the French Quarter is Spanish!!
