  • Lincoln treat leniently. With malice towards
    none. Assassinated in 1865 did not carry out

  • Johnson 10 plan (take oath of loyalty)
  • Recognized new Southern governments.
  • Pardoned rebel leaders.

  • Radical Republicans wanted to punish the South.
  • Wanted blacks to have full equality.
  • Wanted to enlarge Freedmens Bureau
  • Military rule of the south.
  • Southern states pass Black codes which angered
    Congress.
  • Pass 13, 14, and 15th amendments.

Impeachment
  • Impeach to accuse of a crime
  • Tenure of Office Act passed by Congress to
    limit Presidential power to dismiss own cabinet
    members. Johnson felt it was unconstitutional,
    so he dismissed Edwin Stanton (Secretary of War).
    Impeached 1 vote short of removal from office.

Election to end Reconstruction
  • 1876 Tilden (Democrat) v. Hayes (Republican)
  • Tilden wins popular vote, but short electoral
    vote. Election goes to Congress.
  • Compromise Democrats support Hayes
  • Republicans remove military from the south.
  • Appoint a southerner to the cabinet.
