What are the different types of poetry I need to
know before leaving the sixth grade?

Free Verse
  • When a poem is written without a pattern of
    rhyme, meter, or line length. Poets use words and
    images to help make free verse feel different
    from regular sentences.

Narrative Poetry
  • Tells stories and has a plot (setting, conflict,

Limerick Poetry
  • These humorous poems are named after the Irish
    town of Limerick, during the 1700s.
  • Edward Lears Book of Nonsense included the first
    published form of Limericks
  • This book proved to be extremely popular in the
    19th century. This was contributed to by the
    humorous magazine Punch, which started printing
    examples of limericks leading to a craze by its
    readers.

Limerick Format
  • Rhyme The last words of the first, second, and
    fifth lines all rhyme with each other. Also, the
    third and fourth lines MUST rhyme.
  • Rhyme Pattern The 1st,2nd and 5th lines all have
    the rhyme pattern da DUM da da DUM da da DUM
    (notice there are three DUMS or beats).
  • Ex There once was a fellow named Tim da DUM
    da da DUM da da DUM

    da DUM (notice there are 2 DUMS or beats).
  • Ex He fell of the dock da DUM da da DUM
  • Limericks often contain HYPERBOLE, ONOMOTOPEIA,
    IDIOMS and PUNS!
