• 18 years old when Caesar appointed him chief
  heir
• underestimated
• received ¾ of the estate (Antony jealous)

  Antony was not good

CIERO

• made angry speeches/attacks (Philippics) against
  Antony
• died in 43 BC.

2nd Triumvirate

• formed by Octavian, Antony and Lepidus (Caesars
  lieutenant)
• in 43 BC on an island in a river in Cisalpine
  Gaul
• believed they should
• -hold the power for 5 years
• -make laws
• -nominate magistrates and governors
• Brutus and Cassius were with legion in east
• Octavian and Antony were in the west and to make
  alliance, Octavian married Antonys step-daughter
• wished to
• -dispose political enemies
• -raise money
• -reintroduced grim practice of
  proscription (list of names whoever killed a man
  on the list, was rewarded and state would get
  dead mans property)
• 300 senators and 2000 knights on the list
• Octavian agreed to proscript Ciero, even though
  Ciero gave him support. Octavian wanted to
  revenge on all conspirators who killed Caesar,
  even though Ciero wasnt a part of the killers,
  he rejoiced in the killing.
• Octavian and Antony, in Philippi, took 28
  legions to fight with Brutus and Cassius.

• Caesars daughter had a miscarriage and both
  died
• Malnutrition and lack of medical attention
• the poor gave up their children to whoever

• - on the 8th day (girl) or 9th day (boy),
  was the day of purification when the child was
  named

  everyday objects (charm), bulla (wear over
  tunics, gold, bronze or leather locket with a
  lucky charm

• -odds and evens (pebbles or nuts in fist and
  ask how many were in it)

• -riding a long stick (horses)
• -tying mice to a cart
