Throughout the 1500s, England, France, and the
Netherlands all envied Spains new empire in the
Americas. They wanted their own American colonies.
All three countries sent explorers in search of a
Northwest Passage to Asianone were
successful. Remember Columbus was attempting to
find the same route.

as his mutinous crew sails off into the

Rivalries Among European Nations
Religious differences heightened the rivalry
among European nationsthe Protestant Reformation
divided Europe into Catholic (Spain France) and
Protestant (England Netherlands).

New France
Unlike Spains American empire, New France had
little gold or silverthe French profited from
fishing, trapping (furs), and trading. The
French established friendly relations with the
Indians and traded with them. New France
stretched from the St. Lawrence River (in eastern
Canada) to the Great Lakes region.

New France
In 1682, LaSalle sailed down the Mississippi
River to the Gulf of Mexico and named the region
Louisiana in honor of the French king, Louis
XIV. The French built forts along the Great
Lakes and Mississippi River to keep Spain and
England out of Louisiana. They also built a fort
at the mouth of the Mississippi RiverNew
Orleanswhich became a busy trading center.

1680 New France and Louisiana are governed by
the French king and protected by numerous forts,
yet limited freedoms yield a population of just
10,000.

New Netherland
Founded in 1626, the colony of New Netherland is
today known as New York. Its capital city, New
Amsterdam, is now known as New York City. Main
economic rival France, over fur trade. Both
sought alliances with rival Indian nationsthe
Dutch allied with the Iroquois, the French with
the Huron. The fur trade rivalry increased
Indian warfare against European settlers and
rival tribes.
