1 COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR
EVANGELISM
- TELUGU CHRISTIAN CONGREGATION, KUWAIT
2COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- What is effectiveness in communication for
Evangelism? - It is speaking authoritatively using graceful
words (Luke 4.32 They were amazed at his
teaching, because his message had authority - (Luke 4.22) All spoke well of him and were amazed
at the gracious words that came from his lips.
Isnt this Joseph son? They asked - It is helping people connect the ancient Word to
the contemporary world.
3COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- (Acts 14.1) At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as
usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they so
spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews
and Gentiles believed - Effective Communication is a Life impacting and
life transforming communication. - Vision for Evangelism
- The will of God is that no one should perish and
that everyone should have eternal life
4COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- The vision becomes a reality when we act upon
using the following steps - Personalize it
- Cherish it and share it with other
- Write and display it
- Pray for it
- Work for it in the power of the Holy Spirit
- Nearly 50 of the worlds population has not
heard about our - Lord Jesus Christ meaningfully
5COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- At the same time, every day 375,000,000,000 hours
of personal evangelism is done the world over - Also every year95 invitations per person are
given to accept Jesus as their personal savior
(David Barretts Annual Statistical table on
global mission) - Two fold approach for evangelism
- Christians must be challenged to obey the great
commission. Every Christian must become an
evangelist (Prof. Jayakar Chellaraj)
6COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- When we teach to some one, he would start a
second cycle by starting at the first step Go .
The multiplication effect this process triggers
would make evangelization of the world complete
in 33 years or less. - Go preach make disciples baptize teach to
observe - People who respond positively to the great
commission often feel inadequate to evangelize
others. They have to be trained and equipped for
evangelism
7COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- (Eph 4. 11, 12) It was he who gave some to be
apostles, some to be prophets, some to be pastors
and teachers to prepare Gods people for works of
service, so that the body of Christ may be built
up until we all reach unity in the faith and in
the knowledge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure of the
fullness of God. - Definition for communication
- Communication is defined as an interaction. It is
an interaction between the sender and the
receiver. The verbals, non verbals, visuals etc
used by the sender constitute the action. The
responses of the receiver, are reactions. - Communication which is an interaction is a
combination of these two. Communication is a
dynamic process in which the sender and the
listener are actively involved.
8COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Therefore, communication aims bringing changes,
transformation, healing and growth in the
listeners. - Two types of communications
- Intra personal communication is the communication
we have within ourselves. It includes our
communication with God. The preparations we make
for our sermons and presentations are example for
intrapersonal communication. - Interpersonal communication is the communication
we have with others. Our sermons, lectures and
talks come under this category - Jays theory
- The quality of interpersonal communication
depends on the quality of intrapersonal
communication that precedes it.
9COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Our objective is to enhance th4e quality of our
interpersonal communication. According to this
theory, if the quality of our sermons and talks
has to improve, we have to first improved the
quality of the preparations we do in advance. - The success of our communication for evangelism
depends on the quality of intrapersonal
communication we have as preparation.
Intrapersonal communication consists of two
which is primary preparations and secondary
preparations -
- Primary preparations
- Communication for Evangelism is a Life changing
and Life transforming communication. Human skills
and human wisdom are not sufficient to change
people. Primary preparations reach beyond the
human domain and consist of the following
10COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Reading the word of God and meditating upon it
(Psa 1.2, 3) But his delight is in the law of the
Lord and on his law he mediates days and night.
He is like a treeplanted by streams of water
which yields its fruit in the season and whose
leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers - (Psa 119. 99) I have more insight than all my
teachers, for I meditate on your statues - Acting on the word of God
- (Psa 119. 100) I have insight than all my
teachers for I meditate on your statues - (Mat 14. 28-30) Lord, if its you.. Peter
replied, tell me to come to you on the water.
Come he said. Then Peter got down out of the
boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
11COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Repenting, confessing sins and obtaining
- forgiveness
- (Luke 5.8) When Simon Peter saw this, he fell
at Jesus knees and said, go away from me Lord,
I am a sinful man - (Luke 5. 10) And so were James, and John, the
sons of Zebedee, Simons partners. - (Luke 22.62) And he went outside and wept
bitterly. - Obtaining inner peace
- (Mat 11. 28) Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest. - (John 14. 27) Peace I leave with you my peace
I give you. I do not give you as the world gives - Getting empowered through intimacy with God
- (Mark 1. 35) Very early in the morning, while
it was still dark, Jesus got up and left the
house and went off to a solitary place
12COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- (John 8.1 ) Jesus went to the Mount Olives. At
dawn he appeared again, in the temple courts,
where all the people gathered around him and he
sat down to teach them. - (Mark 6.46) After leaving them he went up on a
mountain side to pray (Afternoon) - (Jer 33.3) Call to me and I will answer you
and tell you great and unreachable things you do
not know. - Getting empowered through the anointment of
the Holy Spirit - (Acts 1.8) But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria and to the ends of the earth.
13COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Successfully undergoing the wilderness
experience - Mark 1.13 And he was in the desert forty
days, being tempted by Satan, He was with wild
animals, and angels attending on him - Secondary preparations
- Primary preparations are vital for
effectiveness in communication. Secondary
preparations are important. The secondary
preparations consists of all the usual
preparations that a communicator has to make so
that communication becomes effective.
14COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Specific observable outcomes of Learning (SOOL)
- The main purpose of communication is to bring
about certain Specific observable outcomes in the
learner. - Communication can be effective and purposeful
only if the communicator has clarity in his mind
about these outcomes. - Therefore, the first thing we must do before we
prepare the sermon outline is to write statements
of Specific observable outcomes of leering (SOOL) - These things help us to visualize the result that
we would like to see happening in our learners as
a result of our teaching/preaching.
15COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Level 1
- What shall the learner would remember at the end
of the session. They should remember facts,
concepts, theories, events, names, bible verses
etc., which is a basic requirement in the
learning process. - Teaching activities that achieve this are,
stating, repeating, explaining, using visuals
etc., - Level 2
- What shall the learners would understand as a
result of our communication and what they would
be able to apply in their lives. Communication is
effective only when learners understand what sis
taught and apply their understanding in their
personal and professional lives.
16COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Collecting content - Collect from books,
journals, experts and personal research - Classifying content - Classify content in to
theories, strategies, case studies, etc., - Choosing content - Choosing the right
content for a sermon is a vital step. The content
we choose must meet both the Real and the Felt
needs of people - Some felt needs - People want short and
sweet sermons. They want sermons that are useful,
inspiring, motivating, comfort and encouraging - Some real needs - People need Jesus Christ
in their lives. They need salvation. They need
the fruit of the spirit
17COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Charging content - The content we have chosen
should be presented in a way that is interesting.
The content should be organized logically and
should be communicated at the feeling level. We
can make the presentation interesting by using a
variety of techniques, by involving people, by
relating teaching to the lives and needs of
people by using humor - Preparation of process - The process used in
communication must cause learing to take place in
the listeners and is therefore very important
18COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Three kinds of communication
- One to one communication Personal
evangelism and counseling are examples of this
type of communication -
- One to small group communication In this
type the sender communicates to a small group of
people. - One to large group communication It is also
called mass communication. In visible mass
communication, the audience is directly in front
of communicator. In non visible mass
communication, the audience is reached through
media like radio, TV, newspapers, books,
pamphlets etc.,
19COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- The word communication comes from the word
Communis which means common. Before a message
is communicated, the content of communication is
known only to the sender. After communication is
completed, this content becomes common to the
sender and the receiver. - In effective communication, the sender
communicatges so that his experiences become the
experiences of the receiver fully and completely.
20COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Communication is establishing and enlarging
commonality with listeners. -
- The following steps helps us to do this
- State what they know
- State in the way they know
- State using words they know
- Pronounce words in the way they do
- State what they do not know
- State what they need to know
- Thus, Communication is sharing experiences
- Love, is a prerequisite for effective
communication. -
- An effective communicator desires deep in
his heart that his experiences should become the
experiences of the receivers. This is an attitude
of love. Without love, effective communication is
not possible.
21COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Work Shop
- Read Acts 2. 1 Then Peter stood up with the
eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd,
fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem
let me explain this to you Listen carefully to
what I say. - Why did Peter stand and speak?
- Why did he raise his voice? What are the
suggestions you get from this for effective
communication - Why were eleven standing with Peter? What
does that teach you in the context of effective
communication? - Peter was speaking in second person, in what
way you think this way of speaking in
significant? Do you think that this is the best
way of speaking? Give reasons for your answer
22COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Communication at the Encounter Level
- Levels of communication
- Cliché level or Surface level communication
- Communication at this level is very superficial.
It consists of repetitive statements which are
used for the sake of using. No meaning or purpose
is intended. The communicator is just performing
a duty and he has no vision or goals.
23COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Fact level or Gossip level communication
- At this level, the communicator
communicates ideas and theories of experts. He
may explain the Greek, Latin and Hebrew origins
of words. But, the communicator is not personally
involved in the communication. He may talk a lot
about the love of Jesus Christ as found in the
Bible. But, when he has no personal relationship
with Jesus Christ, his communication is reduced
to mere gossip.
24COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Judgment level communicating
- Communication at this level consists of
facts and theories combined with a
intellectual analysis of these. These merits and
demerits of the ideas so discussed are explained.
This level of communication is intellectually
stimulating. - One problem with this level of
communication is that it emanates mostly from the
mid of the communicator and not from his heart.
In other words, the total person of the
communicator is not involved in the
communication. Since, the communication does not
involve the affective domain it odes not reach
those who labor and are heavy laden.
25COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- iv. Feeling level communication
- This level of communication uses fully the
affective (feeling) and cognitive (thinking)
domains of the communicator. - When we communicate at the Feeling Level, our
verbal which express our thoughts and non
verbal which express our feelings flow freely,
supplementing each other. This level of
communication is powerful and it reaches both the
mind and the heart of the listeners. A problem
with this level of communication is that the
communicator could be so focused on his own ideas
and feelings that the might ignore the feelings
of his listeners. This insensitiveness could take
away the impact of the communication..
26COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- v. Encounter Level
- This the deepest and most effective level of
communication. At this level the communicator not
only express his ideas and feelings but also
recognizes and respects the feelings of his
listeners. It is a communication in which the
communicator and listeners feel together, think
together, search together, learn together and
grow together.
27COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Strategies to Enhance Effectiveness in
- Communication.
- Moving in Fulcrum?
- Look at the following diagram.
-
- a.
-
-
- b.
-
- c.
a. Output is less than input
b. Output equal than input
c. Output greater than input
28COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- In communication input is given by the
communicator and the output takes place in the
listeners. In order to increase the output,
Effective Communicators move the fulcrum, i.e.,
the centre of activity away from themselves so
that it lies closer to the listeners. In other
words, they involve the participants more and
more in the learning process through carefully
designed activities
29COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- 2. Games and Exercise
- Games and Exercise can be suitable designed to
enable people look at their own lives and
evaluate them on Biblical standards. When people
find themselves wanting on these standards they
can be helped to change. Personality Development
Programmers. Are a big draw among the youth.
Activities in these programs can be - designed to lead people to make a commitment
for the Lord.
30COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- 3. Three level teaching
-
- An effective method of communicating is
making available a large set of facts to the
listener, and enabling them to draw concepts
out of these facts. Since these concepts where
formulated by the learners themselves, it will be
easy for them to apply these concepts in various
situations.

Level 3
31COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- 4. Lewins Theory of Groups
- All of us surround ourselves with a personal
space. We would not like strangers to step into
this space. Some people even build a wall of
resistance around themselves because of insecure
feelings. They do not normally allow the word of
God to influence them. This wall gets opened only
in a atmosphere of trust an atmosphere which a
small group could provide. -
32COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- When a person in the group makes an intimate
sharing of a deep personal experience like the
salvation experience, he is in fact, opening his
personal wall and allowing others to enter his
personal space. This kind of sharing by one
person will motivate others in the group to open
their walls of resistance so that new ideas can
step inside this space. This process has helped
many to allow the Lord Jesus Christ enter their
lives.
33COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- 5. Confrontation
- When milk is churned, the cream comes to the
top. Similarly, when people are confronted
carefully and respectfully the best in these
people surfaces and great changes take place in
them. Paul Said .correct, rebuke and
encourage. - 2 Timothy 42
34COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Read Acts 2 15-36.
- This passage contains the most powerful
message that was ever given by a human being. - Identify and list the salient features in
this message. Why do you thin that these features
made the communication effective? - What are some strategies for effective
communication that you learn from this passage?
35COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY FOR EVANGELISM
- Read Acts 2 37-41
- a. Identify in verse 37 the various responses of
people for Peters message. - b. Why do you think they felt that they were cut
to their heart? - c. What is the lesson you learn from this
passage which you can use in your ministry? - a. In verses 38-40, as you read Peters response
to people, what aspects of his response impress
you as significant - b. What do you learn from this as lessons for
your use? - c. What is your reaction to verse 41 as an
effective communicator? -
