    despite the difficulty they caused?

Skill Review Characterization
  • Characterization means the way an author
    communicates information about a character
  • Two Types
  • Direct TELLS US
  • Doug was very lazy!
  • Indirect SHOWS US
  • Doug was bored with the TV show, but the remote
control was across the room, so he just watched
    it anyway.

5
Big Idea CharacterizationDirect and Indirect
  • The difference between direct and indirect
characterization is the same as the difference
between telling and showing. One is simply the
author telling the reader what the character is
like. The other is where the author shows what
    the character's like.
  • Examples
  • Peter was very lazy, and would never shift
himself more than was absolutely necessary.
  • vs.
  • Peter was bored with the TV program, but the
remote control was unfortunately across the room,
so he just watched it anyway. Jan would be home
soon, and she could fetch it for him then.

6
Skill Review Character Motivation
  • Motivation means the drive that causes a
character to do or say something.
  • Two Types
  • Intrinsic/Internal comes from within the
    character
  • Sarah practiced a lot for basketball because
she had a personal goal of getting an athletic
    scholarship to college.
  • Extrinsic/External comes from outside the
    character
  • Sarah made sure to do her English homework
because she knew her parents checked the class
    web-site each week.
