What is a Wiki?
  • Wiki is a piece of server software that allows

    using any Web browser
  • -http//wiki.org/
  • A web site where visitors and administrators can
    edit content easily.
  • Administrators can revert changes if necessary.

4
Why does Cal Poly need a Wiki?
  • Replace or augment several existing systems
  • Easier for non-computer people vs. ordinary web
    editing
  • Allows any user to contribute content
  • Centralized area for Cal Poly content

5
What is WikiPoly
  • WikiPoly is a wiki exclusively for Cal Poly
    students and faculty.
  • To access, users must log in through the portal
  • Diverse content that is user driven
  • Collection of Cal Poly related websites

11
What is on WikiPoly?
  • Prototype
  • Group Area
  • Campus Organizations
  • Professor Evaluations
  • PolyBay
  • Other Areas
  • Senior Project Idea Center.
  • Campus Events

12
Group Area
  • More efficient than email
  • More accessible than Versioning systems
  • More accessible than Blackboard
  • Supports multi-class/college groups

13
Campus Organizations
  • ASIs Website
  • Very pretty and organized well
  • Has much more information than just clubs
  • WikiPolys Website
  • Plain White and organized by users
  • Has just the information that is posted
  • Content editable by any club member

14
Professor Evaluations
  • Emphasis on in-depth comments instead of numbers
  • Encourages users to organize evaluations by
    course.
  • Encourages users to break reviews into different
    topics.
  • Will help to further the dialog between students
    and professors.

15
PolyBay
  • Much more informal than Ebay
  • Put buyer/seller in contact with each other
  • Capability to barter (textbooks)
  • User information/feedback not available

16
Prototype
  • Built using Zope and Zwiki
  • Hosted on local machine, but could be hosted
    anywhere.
  • Difficulties with user permissions

17
Demo
18
Conclusion
  • Wiki is maybe over-simple, but makes life easier
    for non-computer people
  • Allowing anyone to edit page allows for more
    content
  • Heavy moderating will be necessary to prevent
    defacement/offensive postings
