The most common type of violent offences/crimes
among teens
  • Bullying and teasing
  • Gang violence
  • Murders

4
Bullying and teasing
  • Bullying is when someone repeatedly says hurtful
things or physically hurts someone else.
  • Almost 30 of youth in the United States (or over
5.7 million) are estimated to be involved in
bullying as either a bully, a target of bullying,
    or both.

5
Bullying can
  • increase bullied person social isolation
  • feel compelled to take drastic measures, such as
carrying weapons for protection or seeking
    violent revenge
  • Others, in desperation, even consider a suicide.

6
Gangs and teens
  • A gang is usually a group of teens and young
adults who spend much of their time together.
They often plan how to carry out activities that
    usually involve violence.
  • In United States about 7 percent of teens say
    they belong to gangs.
  • Gang members are usually aged from 12 to 25. The
    average age is 17.

7
Gangs harm communities by
  • dealing drugs in their neighborhoods
  • defacing buildings with spray paint
  • beating up or killing people in their
    neighborhoods

8
Youth violence prevention. MST program
  • Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST), developed by
Earlscourt Child and Family Centre in Toronto -
one of the most popular programs in United States
    to work with high-risk youth.

9
MST therapist
  • works intensively with the child and family
members to identify and remedy problems in a wide
    range of areas
  • visits the family several times a week, using
techniques such as family therapy, and parent
    education.

10
Anton Abele
  • 15 year-old Swedish boy won MTV's Free Your Mind
Award 2007 for his demonstrations in Sweden
    against violence between youth.

11
  • Anton Abele created a group on Facebook, Bevara
oss från gatuvåldet (Save Us From Street
Violence) which has attracted over 111,000
    members to date.
  • His actions also led to one of the largest public
    demonstrations in Swedish history in
    Kungsträdgården attended by 12,000 people.

Demonstration organised by Anton Abele against
violence among Swedish youth in Stokholm, October
2007

Conclusion
  • Violence among teenagers is not only bullying
and teasing but also joining gangs and killing
each other for nothing. Prevention programs
against violence among teens are not really
    effective.
  • In order to respond effectively to youth
violence, communities, schools and families must
recognize the necessity of prevention of
    violence.
