2SUICIDE???????
- Suicide Act 1961, it was illegal to commit
suicide and anyone who tried and failed would be
subject to legal proceedings and possible
detention. - The Suicide Act 1961 brought a change to the law
so that suicide is no longer a criminal act. - However, it is still illegal to 'aid or abet'
another person in taking their own life, and
anyone who does this may face a maximum 14 years
imprisonment.
3Different forms of Suicide
- Suicide
- Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one's
own life it is sometimes a noun for one who has
committed, or attempted the act. - Assisted Suicide
- The deliberate hastening of death by a terminally
ill patient with assistance from a doctor, family
member, or another individual. - Para Suicide
- Sometimes called Deliberate Self-Harm. It is a
term used when someone self harms, but does not
kill themselves. - Could be a positive thing because they may just
be harming themselves and releasing anger,
instead of committing suicide.

- Suicide is the third lading cause of death among
adolescents and teenagers. - According to the national institute of mental
health about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers
committed suicide in 2000. - Depression is the leading cause of suicide.
- The National Youth Violence Prevention resource
centre found that - almost 1 in 5 teens had thought about suicide.
- About 1 in 6 teens had made plans for suicide.
- More than 1 in 12 teens had attempted suicide in
the last year.
7Why teens might commit suicide?
- Depression - Signs of developing depression in
teens include - Unhappiness
- Isolated behavior
- Drop in school performance
- Loss of interest in activities that formerly were
sources of enjoyment - Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness,
helplessness - Change in sleep habits and eating habits
- Self-neglect
- Preoccupation with sad thoughts or death

10Suicide Facts
- The suicide rate in men aged 15 and over declined
during the 1990s, until a sharp increase in 1998.
- In 2005, the rate was the lowest throughout the
period 1991 to 2005, at 17.5 suicides per 100,000
population. - Female rates lower, at around six suicides per
100,000 population.

- Increase in drug and alcohol abuse

14Treatment Options for suicide
- It is important that the patient get a good
psychiatric evaluation by a board - certified psychiatrist who specializes in
personality disorders before treatment - begins.
- Psychotherapy Approaches
- this therapy is effective for many patients.
- Patient have 2-3 therapy sessions a week over a
period of years. - meanings and motives of the individual are
understood

school, achieving poor results. - Bullied in primary school, has no friends,

18 conclusion
Based on the evidence that we have presented, it
shows that suicide in teenagers is on the fall,
but it is very common today. Suicide rates in
males has decreased immensely, as they have more
pressures to deal with (e.g. getting a good
education, peer pressure, trying to make friends)
whereas it has stayed average amongst women.
