• Paducah, Kentucky December 1, 1997
• Columbine High School April 20,1999
• Was the bloodiest in U.S. history, 12 students
  and a teacher were killed

School Violence

• Each year 3 million young people are the victims
  of crime at school
• Some acts of violence are serious while others
  are more minor
• School violence seems to come in cycles

What is school violence?

• Violence can range from fights on the playground
  to school shootings
• School violence can be defined as any act that
  physically or physiologically harms people or
  damages school property

School Violence Statistics

• 34 of middle school students and 20 of high
  school students admit they fear being victims of
  school violence
• 80 of teachers report that they are threatened
  with violence at least once a month

Why Middle School violence is higher

• Two Reasons
• -Early adolescence is a difficult and many young
  teenagers do not know socially acceptable
  behaviors
• -In middle school, many times is the first time
  many kids from different backgrounds and
  neighborhoods come together

School Violence in urban areas

• Urban schools suffer the most from school
  violence
• Many of these schools are in neighborhoods that
  are troubled by violence and have gang activity

• The National Youth Violence Campaign sponsors a
  week to help prevent school violence
• Day 1 Promote Respect and Tolerance
• Day 2 Manage Your Anger
• Day 3 Resolve Conflicts Peacefully
• Day 4 Support Safety
• Day 5 Unite in Action

Teacher Strategies

• Take all threats of violence seriously and report
  any threat to the proper authorities
• Know your schools emergency plan for violence
• If there happens to be gun violence in school,
  use three steps rule separate yourself from the
  gun by three steps
• Always remain CALM
