- Pathway to the International Game since 1977
3OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- CYSA ODP Mission Statement
- The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is
dedicated to the development of the highest level
of youth soccer. ODP should provide the greatest
possible opportunity for the youth soccer players
from the CYSA, whose physical talents and mental
maturity are of the level to participate in
State, Regional, National and International
competitions. The process by which that is
accomplished must be achieved in an atmosphere of
integrity, fairness and impartiality. The
physical, cognitive and attitudinal skills of the
individual must be the only criteria for the
inclusion of the program. The procedure to
achieve these objectives must be approved by the
CYSA Board of Directors and must not conflict
with any US Youth Soccer or USSF policies.
4OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- What is the Olympic Development Program
- The Primary objective of the State Olympic
Development Program (ODP) is to identify,
evaluate and train highly talented youth soccer
players. As part of the National effort, the
CYSA ODP is dedicated to developing the highest
level of youth soccer. The Olympic Development
Program is a National process for identifying and
developing the best youth soccer players. The
process promotes players to the U.S. National
teams, which represent the United States in
International competition, such as the Youth
World Cup and the Olympics.

- Who is eligible?
- Any soccer player who meets the age requirements
for the established age group is eligible to
participate. Calendar year is the established
age groupings for ODP. Players are in a
designated age group by their birth year.

- Open Try-Outs
- DOC Recommendation
- State Level
- Try-Outs in September, October, December
- Regional Level
- Region IV ODP Camp
- National Level
- Regional ODP Events (Camps, Tournaments,
Showcases) - Club Events

9OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- I was selected, so am I on the team?
- District Level At this level, you have been
selected to attend State Try-Outs and try out for
the State ODP Pool. - State Level Once a player has been selected you
are a part of the age group pool for that ODP
season. Players will be evaluated at
trainings/camps, and a specific number of players
will be selected to attend Regional Camp, where
they will try-out for the Regional pool. - Regional Level At Regional Camp, players will be
evaluated, where the top players will be selected
to the age group pool for that ODP season. - National Level US Soccer staff look at players
in many different environments. Players are
selected to attend youth National training camps,
where they establish a pool of players. Players
are selected from this pool to attend National
Competition. -
10OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- What is the time commitment?
- District Level No competition or trainings at
the District level, this is just part of the
identification process. - State Level The State ODP program will hold
trainings/camps where players will be selected to
attend State Competition and Regional Camp
try-outs. - Regional Level National and International
competition. Training sessions are built into
these schedules. Most events are 5-10 days in
length. - National Level Training camps (up to 6 days),
and Competition (5-10 days) - This program is not meant to replace the club
team but to enhance the players development and
promote the player to the next level. Players
with the strongest commitment will benefit most
form this program.
11OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- Why should I participate in the Olympic
Development Program? - Participation will provide opportunities to play
with and against the best players in the state,
region or nation. - Exposure to different coaches and different
playing styles. - Supplemental training opportunities to enhance
your club training and development. - Potential identification and selection to the
National Pool. - Potential identification and selection to a top
college.
12OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- Am I good enough to participate?
- Talk to your coach or club Director of Coaching
- Can you maintain your level of play outside the
comfort zone of your current club team? - Can you execute technical skills at speed while
under the pressure of an opponent? - Do you make good decisions with and without the
ball? - Are you committed to self improvement and the
drive to play at the next level?
13OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- Other factors to consider
- It is extremely exclusive. At some point every
player gets released from the process. - Although it may be considered to be cost
prohibitive for some players, financial aid and
scholarships may be available. - Time away from family, friends, school and club
team.
14OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- ODP in CYSA
- The CYSA ODP includes the following ages 13, 14,
15 and 16 year old Boys and Girls. Because ODP
age groups are based on the calendar year the
age groups will change each season based on the
birth year of the players. (Ex for 2011-2012 the
13 years old will be all born in 1999). All
players must try-out for the new State ODP pools
each season, even previous State, Regional and
National players. Because of the large number of
player in the CYSA membership, ODP try-outs begin
in the spring/summer at the District level. - Spring/Summer
- Each District is challenged to find the best
players in each age group through an open try-out
process or a DOC Recommendation Process. Several
Districts offer both so as not to miss any
players. Once these players are identified, their
names are submitted to the CYSA office by
September 1st and invited to attend CYSA State
Pool Try-outs. State Pool try-outs begin in
September and conclude in December. -
15OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- ODP in CYSA (cont)
- Fall
- State Try-Outs are by invitation only and are not
a Open try-out. The State ODP will have (1)
Sunday try-out for each gender in September,
October and December. Players identified through
the District process, will be invited beginning
in September and will attend until notified of
their status on the team. Returning State
players will join the try-outs in October and
will also attend until notified of their status
on the team. The final pool announcement will be
at the December try-out. Every year the pool size
is adjusted to meet the needs of the seasons
activities. - Once the State ODP Pool has been named, the
players will be expected to participate in the
training sessions (Mini-Camps or training dates).
While every effort has been made when scheduling
trainings and camps to avoid or minimize a
players conflict with other soccer activities,
sometimes there still could be some conflict.
This is when player must often make some tough
decisions, and sometimes ODP may not the right
choice for them. This is why we ask that each
player really think about their decision to
commit to this program, before they begin the
try-out process. -
16OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- ODP in CYSA (cont)
- Winter/Spring/Summer
- During this time of year the State ODP coaches
will prepare the players to attend Region IV ODP
Camp, where they will try-out for the US Youth
Soccer Region IV ODP Pools. These pools are made
up of the best players in each age group in the
14 western soccer states. - Fall/Winter/Spring Regional Pools
- Once a player is selected to the Region IV ODP
Player Pool, they may be Called-up to attend an
event with the Regional Team that may be a
Regional, National or International event. Not
all players will be called up during a seasonal
year, it depends on the event. Not all pools
participate in the same events, there are
specific trips planned for specific age groups.
Keep in mind, during the fall, even Regional
players will attend state ODP try-outs. Hence,
the levels of ODP do overlap during the calendar
year. - All year Youth National Pool
- The YNT coaches scout players year round and have
training camps throughout the year. -
17OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- ODP in CYSA and costs
- The costs in ODP are directly related to the
events or activities the players are
participating in. The ODP in CYSA is not a
revenue generating program for the membership, in
fact ODP is subsidized by the membership to help
defray the total expense to CYSA players. While
the cost to participate may seen high, please
keep in mind state ODP often compete out of state
and require airline tickets, ground
transportation, meals and lodging. Additionally,
while the CYSA ODP staff is volunteer the
excellent program curriculum and organization is
administrated by a paid Technical Director and
experienced professional support staff. - Every year we assess the costs related to the ODP
activities and do our best to modify and change
to help meet everyone needs. Additionally, CYSA
does offer payment plans and scholarships to its
members to help make participation affordable. -
18OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- Several years ago CYSA phased out the U17 State
ODP Pool for a number of reasons. However, US
Youth Soccer Region IV still provides a viable
program for the U17s and continues to select
players for U19/20 events at the National level.
Players in CYSA can still be identified in any
event and recommended to the Region IV staff to
be included as an invitational player and be
invited into U17 Regional Camp. One of the
places that players will be identified is CYSA
State Cup and CCSL.

21OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- The Future of ODP
- The Olympic Development Program is evolving all
the time to meet the needs of players at every
level. Every 4 years our National team will
hopefully be competing in World Cup and often
depending on that outcome, the US National Staff
will re-evaluate the Coaching Curriculum (Style
of Play, Principles of Play and Coaching
Philosophy). For this reason, it is extremely
important that the coaching staff within ODP stay
educated and on the cutting edge of what the
National Staff is looking for in a player.
22OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- In Conclusion
- The Olympic Development Program provides players
the opportunity to test themselves against the
best in the State, Region and Nation. - The goal of the program is to push the player to
the next level of challenge. - Players must be adaptable and be able to perform
at their peak in an ever changing environment.
23OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
- The best of the elite players will only rise to
the top based on their own dedication and
commitment. A quote form Anson Dorrance - Whether you're chosen or not, you're going to
win, because there are wonderful victories in
both cases. If fact, I think the higher-level
individual can triumph greater in not being
selected, because the strength to take
responsibility and recommit, or the strength to
accept that our best was eclipsed by someone
else's best, is a more powerful statement of
character than just making the team. Through
adversity, you can grow more as a person, and a
part of the growth can be a decision on who you
have decided to become as a player. - Anson Dorrance, University Of North Carolina Head
Women's Soccer Coach And Former United States
National Team Coach -
