Title: The Organization of the Human Body
1The Organization of the Human Body
- Intro to the Human Body Chapter 1
2The Human Body is organized into 11 systems
- These 11 systems are responsible for maintaining
homeostasis within the body. - Homeostasis is a condition in which the bodys
internal environment remains within certain
physiological limits (98, 120/80, etc)
3The Eleven Principle Body Systems, the organs
involved and their function
- Can be found on page 4 in your textbook
4For the bodys cells to survive, the interstitial
fluid of the body must remain in homeostasis-
this means balancing concentration of
- Gases (O2, CO2, etc.)
- Nutrients
- Ions like Cl-, K, Na, etc.
5Stress upsets Homeostasis
- Stress can come from external factors like
extreme heat or cold, or lack of oxygen, etc. - Stress can also originate internally from stimuli
like high blood pressure, illness, bad thoughts,
etc.
6The Body Possesses Devices that Work to Maintain
Homeostasis
- These devices are all under the control of the
nervous system. - The nervous system detects problems in the body,
then sends signals to corrective devices that
then return the body to homeostasis.
7The body maintains homeostasis through positive
and negative feedback
8Body organs and systems are contained within the
two basic body cavities
- The dorsal cavity- contains the cranial cavity
(skull) and vertebral column - The ventral cavity- made up of the thoracic and
abdominopelvic cavities. - See Fig 1-7 on page 13
9(No Transcript)
10Both the Thoracic and Abdominopelvic Cavities are
further subdivided
- See exhibit 1.3 on page 11

directional terms
