Title: Science Study Guide Weather Unit

1
Science Study GuideWeather Unit
  • By Ms. Lawson
  • 10-29-03

2
Vocabulary to Know
  • Precipitation- Rain, sleet, hail, snow, or
    freezing rain.
  • Condensation- The change of gas to a liquid.
  • Evaporation-The change of a liquid to a gas.
  • Water Cycle- A never-ending cycle of water
    (evaporation, condensation, and precipitation)

3
More Vocabulary
  • Barometer- an instrument used to measure air
    pressure.
  • Anemometer- an instrument used to measure wind
    speed.
  • Weather (or wind) vane- an instrument used to
    measure wind direction.

4
Still More Vocabulary
  • Air Pressure- the weight of the air that is
    always pressing down on earth.
  • Atmosphere- a thin layer of air surrounding the
    earth.
  • Troposphere- the layer of the atmosphere that
    contains all weather.
  • Weather- the condition of the air around the
    earth.

5
Important Information
  • Weather is determined by the air or the
    atmosphere around the earth.
  • Weather happens in the troposphere.
  • When temperatures are warm, the mercury in a
thermometer rises. When temperatures are cold,
the mercury in a thermometer drops.

6
More Information
  • Apparent Path- is the direction that a warm front
or a cold front will probably take.
  • Warm fronts and high pressure bring good weather
and warmer temperatures. They usually bring fair
    weather.

7
More Information
  • Cold fronts and low pressure bring bad weather,
    cooler temperatures, and usually precipitation.
  • When warm air meets cooler air, a thunderstorm
will usually occur, especially in the summer
    months.

8
Open Response Questions
  • Water is a form of matter. Matter exists in
    different states. Using this information,
describe and illustrate the water cycle.
