- Established in 1992
- Administered by the UNDP on behalf of the three
GEF Implementing Agencies
4SGP is offered in 84 countries
5SGP works with local communities
- Provides direct funding to NGOs and CBOs up to a
maximum of US50,000 per project - Has funded more than 5,500 community-based
projects
6SGP Challenges GEF and the community
- The SGPs greatest challenge is to reconcile GEF
criteria and community needs and priorities.
7Capacity Building and Raising Awareness
- SGP projects meet this challenge by building
local capacities and raising public awareness
about GEFs main concerns -- biodiversity
conservation, climate change mitigation,
international waters protection, reduction of the
impacts of POPs and prevention of land
degradation.

- The SGP must balance global criteria and goals
with programme implementation that is appropriate

local NGOs and CBOs - Resource mobilization potential

- Existence of environmental threats in GEF
thematic areas - Existence of areas with significant global
diversity - Satisfactory Government-NGO relations
- Positive enabling environment
- Presence of other relevant donor
- Presence of one or more regular GEF projects
- Presence of other UNDP small grant programmes to
promote sustainable development (Africa 2000
Network, LIFE)

Ministry or Government Agency in charge of
environment - Contains full account of how country meets
eligibility criteria - Sent through UNDP Resident Representative to SGP
Global Manager - Priority given to SIDS and LDCs
