2What is NMM?
- An evolving framework and international standard,
built using XML and associated technologies, to
describe climate numerical models. - to add value to the climate model data
- to assist in the exchange of information about
numerical codebases, and the models done using
them - to extend and refine the researcher's ability to
understand how resulting output data was
produced.
3Intent of NMM
- Primary intent is to add value/provenance to
model output data. - Part of a suite of metadata which will completely
describe the model. - Not the intent to be able to re-create/re-run a
model. - Not the intent to be able to use it as a
modelling/coupling framework.
4NMM Framework - Codebase
- created once - by developer - automatic
creation from code?

6NMM Queries and Answers
Query CF compliant data files for dates Returned
source(s) are the NMM Model XML files
What Models have data from 1845 to 1956?
7NMM Queries and Answers

8NMM Codebase
Codebase
Component Atmosphere
Component Land
Component Ocean
9Codebase
- One NMM codebase XML file for each codebase
(could be very large) - It is written by developers (to output with
framework?) - It documents the codebase possibilities/
potential.

11NMM Model
- Ideally NMM Model XML file is automatically
created. - Scientist decides when to save it. Can save it
with every configuration if using it in a
personal notebook scenario or just when data is
ready to be sent off to a data center.
12Implementing NMM
- Used the NMM to document the IPCC Models at PCMDI
- Created 23 NMM XML files, one for each model
using PCMDI online documentation/questionnaire - Used XSL to format/aggregate all into a table

16Simulation Intercomparison
- An atmospheric model component, the UK Met.
Office Unified Model, version 5.5, was used for
two simulations run at the same resolution, N96
(135 km) horizontal with 38 levels in the
vertical, on the same computer and producing the
same model output. - In the cloud scheme of the Unified Model, a grid
point model, fluctuations about the grid box mean
vapour plus liquid water content are
parameterised via a probability density function
with a width specified through the critical
relative humidity parameter (RHCrit ). The
selection of the RHCrit parameterization causes
the cloud scheme to use a 3D diagnosed critical
relative humidity parameter Simulation A. In
Simulation B, the RHCrit parameterization scheme
has not be selected so a 1D level dependent
constant is used by the model
