  • Katherine was born in Wellington, New Zealand
    into a middle-class family.
  • Her father was a very conservative banker.
  • Her mother was of genteel origins.
  • Mansfield published her first text at the age of
    9.

Mansfields Travels
  • In 1903 she moved to London to study at Queens
    College where she joined the staff of College
    Magazine.
  • She moved back to New Zealand in 1906 and began
    studying music.
  • Katherine moved back to England when her father
    refused to allow her to become a professional
    cello player.

  • In 1908 she moved back to London never to return
    to New Zealand again.
  • Before her marriage to George Brown, she had an
    affair with Garnett Trowell, a musician, and
    became pregnant.
  • She later suffered a miscarriage of the baby.

Works and Writing
  • In Germany, she wrote satirical sketches, which
    were published in 1911 under the title In a
    German Pension.
  • Until 1914, she published stories in Rhythm The
    Blue Review.
  • 1915, she met her brother. After his death in
    WWI, she focused her writing on her family.

Difficult Years
  • 1918- discovered that she has tuberculosis.
  • Creative years were burdened by illness.
  • Died in 1923 from a pulmonary hemorrhage.
