- You must be able to identify and know the purpose
and characteristics of the main hardware
components of an ICT system including - input devices, e.g. keyboard, mouse, scanner, bar
code reader, sensor - processors, e.g. central processing unit (CPU)
- output devices, e.g. screen, printer, speaker,
motor - ports and cables, e.g. parallel, serial,
universal serial bus (USB) - storage devices, e.g. RAM, hard drive, CD, DVD,
floppy disk. - Some systems use additional devices, e.g.
networked systems need network interface
cards(NICs) and systems accessing the internet
may use a modem or broadband connection.
3Storage Devices - Definitions
- Storage - Computers store data either in chips
inside the computer or on other media eg CDs.
Storage in chips may be either ROM or RAM. When
data is stored in a chip it is immediately
accessible by the processor. - ROM - Read only memory. Computer memory whose
contents can be read but not altered. - RAM - Random access memory. A fast, temporary
memory area where programs and data are stored
only while a computer is switched on.

- Internet - Worldwide network of computer
networks. It is the largest connected set of
computers in the world. - World wide web - A system of file servers on the
internet that supports pages in HTML and
graphics, audio and video files, - Internet service provider (ISP) - A company that
provides a connection to the internet eg BT, NTL - Broadband - A very high speed internet
connection (usually cable)

use of compression - SMS (simple message service) - Service that
mobile phones use to send and receive short
messages. - WAP (wireless application protocol) - A mobile
phone service that allows the phone to access the
