6COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for
students with an elementary knowledge of Italian.
It will be include a complete review of Italian
grammar but will focus on speaking, reading,
writing and oral comprehension.
7At the end of the two semester sequence, you
should be able to follow lectures in
Italian engage in general conversation with a
native speaker read most contemporary prose
write compositions with acceptable style and
correctness
8ATTENDANCEregular class attendance is
required no unexcused absences or late
arrivals are allowed excused absence is
allowed only for an extreme circumstance
9If you MUST be absent, you must fill out an
absence report and hand it to me on the day you
return to class. A copy of the absence report
is attached to this syllabus.
10ASSIGNMENTSFollowing the syllabus, grammar and
vocabulary are to be studied, and exercises
prepared prior to class meetings. No assignments
will be accepted late. If you are sick, you
will be expected to hand in the assignment the
day you return to class.
11LAB Students are expected to spend at least one
hour every week in the language laboratory in
order to improve listening and speaking skills.
You must use the tapes to improve their
pronunciation and patterns of intonation.
12There will also be computer activities to improve
reading skills and understanding of grammar.
There will be two software packages available to
you Grammar Pro! and Transparent Language.
13The Grammar Pro! offers you tutorials on
particular grammar points. (Go into Outline form
and choose the grammar point you want to review.)
There are also quizzes you can use to test your
understanding of each grammar point.
14There is online help available and your
instructor will give you some written
instructions on how to use the software. During
class you will be tested on the reading that you
do in the lab on the computer.

and Unscramble. Consult word and sentence
translations as needed Obtain additional
cultural information and learning hints in
"Notes"
17QUIZZESThere will be regular written quizzes,
the dates of which will be indicated by your
instructor one week in advance.You must be
present for every quiz. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP
QUIZZES.
18If you miss one quiz, you will not receive a
grade for that quiz. At the end of the semester,
that missing grade will be filled in it will be
the lowest quiz grade you have for the semester.
19For example, if there were 6 quizzes in the
semester and you took 5 quizzes (grades 80, 75,
85, 88, 70), at the end of the semester your
grades will be 80, 75, 85, 88, 70, 70).
20This only applies to the first missed quiz. If
you miss more than one quiz, you will receive a 0
for each additional quiz missed.
21Final examThe final exam will take place the
last week of class this semester. It will be a
cumulative exam, covering all chapters we have
studied this semester. It will be very similar to
the quizzes, except longer. We will have review
sessions before the exam.
22 EVALUATION Evaluation will be based
on attendance (in class and in the lab), on
performance in class, on quizzes, on exams, on
completion of all assignments on time.
23Your FINAL GRADE will be calculated according to
