Johnson County Solid Waste Management Plan

• KS Counties are responsible for ensuring adequate
  solid waste disposal capacity for all waste
  generated within the County.
• Solid Waste Management Committee is county wide
  representatives appointed by Council of Mayors
  and Board of County Commissioners.
• Cost Effective.
• Environmentally responsible.
• Recycle, Reduce, Reuse.

Key Drivers in the Plan

• At current rates, the landfill may be full in as
  little as 10 years.
• The landfill to close no later than 2027.
• Currently, no large landfills are planned to be
  built.
• Where will our trash go?
• How will we keep costs low?

Key Plan Recommendations

• Expand residential recycling services.
• Provide yard waste composting services, then
  restrict disposal at landfill.
• Implement volume-based trash collection rate
  structures with unlimited free recycling.
• Increase commercial recycling by 35.

• A new landfill in our region is not likely.

  Transfer Station, APAC-Reno C/D Landfill.

Why Recycle Paper?
Recycling 1 Ton of Paper

• save 17 trees
• 380 gallons of oil
• three cubic yards of landfill
• 4,000 kilowatts of energy
• 7,000 gallons of water!
• A total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide absorbed
  from the air each year

Why Recycle Aluminum?

• There is no limit to the amount of times an
  aluminum can can be recycled.
• Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part
  of a new can within six weeks.
• Making new aluminum cans from used cans takes 95
  percent less energy.

Why Recycle Plastic?

• It takes about 25 recycled plastic drinks bottles
  to make one fleece jacket.
• Recycling one ton of soda and water bottles saves
  7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.
• PET bottles are made into carpet, clothing,
  automotive parts and park benches and even tennis
  balls.

Future Composting Plans

• Increase composting services in the county.
• Ban yard waste from landfills in 2009.
• Deffenbaugh customers are now required to
  separate yard waste and dispose of it in a paper
  bag.
• Changes to costs of yard waste collection.

• Start a backyard compost pile and use the product
  on your gardens.
• Use a drop-off facility

County Leads by Example

• Zero waste by 2020 within County Government
• Generate no yard waste from Parks and Rec or
  Public Works.
• Demonstration on-site food composting at Sunset
  office (2009).
• Purchase 100 recycled paper.
• Started a paper reduction campaign.
• Recycling at all our facilities, including parks
  and libraries (coming soon).
