- Which of the following is an example of a
chemical change? - Glass shattering
- Wood burning
- Water boiling
- Salt mixing with sugar
A chemical change is the change a substance
undergoes when it becomes a new or different
substance. A physical change is when the state or
shape of the structure is changed. The new
substance has the same properties as the old one.
When glass shatters, it is still glass, it just
changes state.
When wood burns, it turns from wood to ash, which
is metal carbonates and oxides.
When water boils,it is still water, it just
changes state.
When salt and sugar are mixed, they are still two
different substances salt and sugar.
The answer, therefore, is B, wood burning. The
wood changes into a completely different
substance and cannot be turned back into wood.
