Addition information
  • Definition of percentile
  • A value on a scale that indicates the percent of
a distribution that is equal to it or below it.
For example, a score at the 95th percentile is
equal to or better than 95 percent of the
    scores. (from DPIs glossary at
    http//dpi.wi.gov/standards/mathglos.html)
  • DPI Math Standards
  • By the end of Grade 12, all students should
  • E.12.1. Work with data in the context of
    real-world situations...
  • E.12.2. Organize and display data from
    statistical investigations using percentiles,
    quartiles, deciles.
  • By the end of Grade 8, all students should
  • E.8.1 Work with data in the context of real-world
    situations
  • Use the results of data analysis to make
    predictions, develop convincing arguments, and
    draw conclusions.
  • Additional Needs Assessment
  • Teachers need to understand percentiles in order
to interpret students standardized test score
results correctly. In particular, a score in the
70th percentile is not average, but is in fact
better than 70 percent of all students who took
    the test.

A. Bill got 70 of the test correct. B. 70 scores
were lower than Bills score. C. 30 of the
scores were higher than Bills score. D. Bills
score was approximately one standard deviation
above the mean test score for the group.

Feedback for D Incorrect. A percentile ranking
can sometimes be linked to standard deviations,
but we would need more information about the
scores distribution.
Feedback for C Correct! Being in the 70th
percentile means Bill did as well as about 70 of
his peers, so 30 outscored him.
On an achievement test taken by a large group of
people, Bill scored at the 70th percentile with
respect to the test-score distribution for the
group. This information implies that

Feedback for A Incorrect. Bills percentile
ranking refers to how he did relative to all
others who took the test.
Feedback for B Incorrect. It is true that
approximately 70 percent of scores were below
Bill, but not necessarily 70 scores.
Programmer The slider should range from 1 to 100
(for 1st percentile to 100th percentile.)
Initially, it should be placed at the 19th
percentile. As it slides, the percentages should
change in unit increments to show the percent of
the rectangle that lies below / above the arrows
position. The textbox in the lower right should
also change to reflect the current percentile.
The slider currently in the 19th percentile.
A percentile ranking divides the scores into a
low group ( below) and a high group ( above).

respect to the test-score distribution for the
group. This information implies that A. Alissa
scored better than 35 of her peers. B. Alissa
scored worse than 35 of her peers. C. Alissas
score is about 1 standard deviation above the
mean. D. Alissas score was below average for the
test.
A. Incorrect. Percentile ranking gives the
percent of scores that were worse than the given
score. B. Correct! C. Incorrect. A percentile
ranking can sometimes be linked to standard
deviations, but we would need more information
about the scores distribution. D. Incorrect.
An average score would probably be closer to the
50th percentile (which is the median, or middle,
score). That is well below Alissas percentile
rank.

On an achievement test taken by a large group of
people, Ben was outscored by 40 of the other
test-takers. This information implies
that A. Bens score is below the median score
for the group. B. Bens score is in the 40th
percentile. C. Bens score is in the 60th
percentile. D. Ben scored better than 40 of the
other test-takers.
A. Incorrect. The median score is the middle
score, so it would be outscored by 50 of the
group, not 40. B. Incorrect. If Bens score was
in the 40th percentile, he would have done better
than 40 of his peers. The question says the
opposite of that. C. Correct! D. Incorrect. The
question says 40 of test-takers beat Ben, not
the other way around.

On an achievement test taken by a large group of
people, Cassie correctly answered 30 of the 40
questions on the test. This information implies
that A. Cassies score is in the 75th
percentile. B. Cassies score is in the 25th
percentile. C. Cassies score is in the 30th
percentile. D. Cassies percentile score cannot
be determined from the given information.
A. Incorrect. Cassie got 75 of the questions
right, but that does not mean she scored in the
75th percentile. B. Incorrect. Cassie got 25 of
the questions wrong, but that does not mean she
scored in the 25th percentile. C. Incorrect.
Remember that Cassies percentile ranking
describes the percentage of test-takers that
scored worse than Cassie. D. Correct! Unless we
know more about how Cassies score compared to
everyone elses scores, we cannot determine her
percentile ranking.

80th percentile. C. Danis score is in the 40th
percentile. D. Danis score is in the 60th
percentile.
A. Incorrect. On the other hand, 20 of the
test-takers did outscore Dani B. Correct! Dani
scored as well or better than 1600 / 2000 people,
or 16/20. That is 4/5 of the test-takers, or
80. C. Incorrect. Try looking at the ratio of
the number of people Dani outscored to the total
number of people who took the test. D. Incorrect.
Try looking at the ratio of the number of people

On an achievement test taken by a large group of
people, Erin came to see you to discuss her sons
test results. The report showed her son scored at
the 53rd percentile. This information implies
that A. Erins son correctly answered only
about 53 of the test questions. B. Erins son
failed the test. C. Erins son outscored more
than half of the test-takers. D. Both B and C are
correct.
A. Incorrect. Remember, a percentile ranking
compares a single score to the rest of the
scores. It is not the same as percent
correct. B. Incorrect. Usually 53 correct is a
failing grade, but percentile ranking is not the
same as percent correct. C. Correct! A student
who scores in the 53rd percentile has done as
well or better than 53 of the test-takers. D. Inc

score is in the 20th percentile. C. Francines
score is in the 80th percentile. D. Francines
score is in the 83rd percentile.
A. Incorrect. Francine outscored most of the
other test takers, so her percentile ranking
should be higher than this. B. Incorrect.
Francine outscored most of the other test takers,
so her percentile ranking should be higher than
this. C. Incorrect. Consider the ratio of (people
Francine outscored) to the (total number of
people). D. Correct! Francine scored higher than
1000 people, and 1000/1200 10/12 5/6, or
about 83.

To qualify for a certain scholarship, applicants
must score at or above the 90th percentile on a
60-question test that is taken by a large group
of people. This information implies
that A. Approximately 10 of test-takers will
fail to qualify for the scholarship
B. Applicants must correctly answer at least 54
questions to qualify. C. An applicant who only
answers 45 questions correctly has failed to
qualify. D. Applicants must do better than 90 of
the other test-takers in order to qualify.
A. Incorrect. Scoring at or above the 90th
percentile is a pretty tough requirement! B. Incor
rect. Remember that the percentile rank gives the
percent of scores at or below a given score it
is not the same as percent answered
correctly. C. Incorrect. If the test is
extremely difficult, even the top score (which
would be in the 100th percentile) could be quite
low! D. Correct!

To qualify for a certain scholarship, applicants
must correctly answer 18 out of 20 questions on a
test that is taken by a large group of people.

must score at least 90 on the test to
qualify. B. Approximately 10 of test-takers will
fail to qualify for the scholarship
C. Applicants must score at or above the 90th
percentile in order to qualify. D. Both B and C
are correct.
A. Correct! B. Incorrect. In fact, it is
possible that everyone will meet the requirement
in this case! C. Incorrect. It depends on how
difficult the test is. Answering 90 of the
questions does not necessarily correspond to the
90th percentile. D. Incorrect. The requirement is
not based on relative performance compared to
other test-takers, only on answering 90 of the
questions correctly.

test takers. This information implies
that A. Iriss score is in the 60th
percentile. B. Iriss score is below the median
score for the group. C. Iris answered 40 of the
questions correctly. D. Iris answered 60 of the
questions correctly.
A. Incorrect. If Iriss score was in the 60th
percentile, she would have done better than 60
of her peers. The question says the opposite of
that! B. Correct! Since 60 outscored Iris, she
must be below the median (or middle) score for
the group. C. Incorrect. Iris was outscored by
60 of test-takers, but that does not mean she
missed 60 of the questions. D. Incorrect. Iris
was outscored by 60 of test-takers, but that
does not mean she answered 60 of the questions
correctly.
