Title: Engineering at UAF
1Engineering at UAF
- Dr. Robert A. Perkins, PE
2(No Transcript)
3- "Engineering is the application of math and
science to create something of value from our
natural resources."
4Creative
- Engineers
- Synthesize, solve problems, and innovate. In
other words, - Make new things and make old things better.
5Kinds of Engineers
- Aerospace Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical/Computer Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
6More types of Engineers
- Biomedical Engineers
- Geological and Geophysical Engineers
- Chemical Engineering
- Ceramic/Materials Engineering
- Mining Engineers
- Nuclear Engineers
- Petroleum Engineers
- Marine and Ocean Engineering and Naval
Architecture
7Agricultural and Biological Engineers

10UAF Engineering Programs
- Civil
- Mining
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Geological
- Petroleum
11Civil Engineering
- The art and science of designing the
infrastructure of a modern CIVILized society.
12Major Areas (Sub-disciplines)
- Structural
- Environmental
- Transportation
- Geotechnical
- Water Management
- Construction Management
13Structural
14Structural Engineers design steel, concrete, or
timber framed structures such as
Tall Buildings, Bridges, Dams, Towers, Platforms,
Retaining Walls, Foundations, and Stadiums.
15Environmental
16Sanitary Waste Treatment Industrial Waste
Treatment Potable (Drinking) Water
Treatment Environmental Contamination Landfills Ru
ral
17Transportation
18 Transportation Engineers design and analyze
Highways, Railways, Airports, Urban and Suburban
Road Networks, Parking Lots, and Traffic Control
Signal Systems.
19Geotechnical
20Geotechnical Engineers analyze the subterranean
rock and soil to determine its suitability to
support extreme loads. Although not very
glamorous, proper geotechnical engineering is
essential for a safe and secure structure.
21Water Management
22Water Management involves the use of hydrologic
and hydraulic principles to design drainage
systems, detention/retention ponds, navigational
waterways, and flood control levees, dams, and
lakes.
23Construction Management
24Civil Engineers often work as Project
Construction Managers. Construction Managers
review contracts, order materials, hire and
schedule sub-contractors. The job of a
construction manager is to provide quality
control and insure that the construction project
is completed on time and within budget.
25Jobs
- Lots of Civil Engineering jobs in Alaska
- Last year we had three openings for each graduate
- Typical CE graduates start at 45,000 per year.
26Mechanical
- Machines
- Energy
- Materials
27Electrical
- Power Transmission
- Communications
- Digital (computer hardware)
28- All UAF programs are accredited
- Very high pass rate on standardized engineering
tests - High acceptance rates in graduate schools
- All find excellent jobs
29Admissions
- Engineering is very demanding, but
- Its easy to get started at UAF
- Many returning and non-traditional students
- Lots of help for new students
- tutoring
- mentoring
