Harrington Library Consortium
  • Bringing the Panhandle Closer Together
  • The only multi-institutional cooperative library
    network in Texas reflecting availability of
    holdings and supporting a universal library card!

Mission Statement
  • The mission of the Harrington Library Consortium
    is to strengthen and promote excellent library
    services among our member libraries. The
    Consortium provides library automation products
    and services, training and continuing education,
    exploration of innovative technologies and
    products, and library business intelligence for
    informed decision-making.
  • The Consortium helps realize the potential of
    its member libraries through resource sharing,
    cost savings, and member collaboration. The
    consortium supports our members as information
    and technology literacy providers for the
    citizens of the Texas Panhandle.

  • Library directors from Amarillo College, Amarillo
    Public Library and West Texas State Universitys
    Cornette Library met informally to discuss
    cooperation and resource sharing opportunities.
  • Received a grant through the Texas State Library
    to convert cataloging information into
    computer-readable form.
  • Received a 1,526,160 grant from the Harrington
    Foundation on September 16, 1980
  • First Official Council Meeting on January 7, 1981

  • Enlisted the library consulting services of RMG
    Consultants, Inc. on May 12, 1981 to advise and
    provide technical expertise to consortium
    members.
  • First collaborating libraries Amarillo Colleges
    Learning Resource Center, Amarillo Public
    Library, Texas Tech University Health Sciences
    Center Library at Amarillo, and West Texas State
    Universitys Cornette Library established the
    name Harrington Library Consortium.
  • Harrington Library Consortium was officially
  • formed and named on July 16, 1981.

    a Council composed of the
  • Chief administrator of each member institution
  • Chair of each advisory committee
  • One elected representative of the Harrington
    User Group (HUG)
  • Chief administrator of the Amarillo
    Independent School District.

CONSORTIUM GOALS OBJECTIVES

  • Improve access to library materials through
    automation.
  • Increase effectiveness of library operations
    through automation.
  • Increase funding to improve or expand library
    resources and services.
  • Implement a managed collection development
    program.
  • Provide automated services to other area
    libraries.
  • Promote and support the development of
    compatibility with other local, regional or
    national networks.
