Title: Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph Status

1
Prime Focus Imaging SpectrographStatus
  • 8 of 9 collimator and 6 of 9 camera lenses
    received (including all CaF2 lenses)
  • Slitmask mechanism assembled and wired, waveplate
    mechanism assembled
  • Structure in fabrication at Rutgers
  • Waveplates shipping beamsplitter due next month
  • Mass under control margin improved 11.8 ? 15.3
    kg
  • Control system wiring, S/W in progress
  • With gt96 awarded, use of budget reserve is 77
  • Concerns schedule

2
Optics
  • Collimator- looks like it will be ready in time
    for the structure (Jan)
  • Camera- Unless coating goes faster than vendor
schedule (12 wks), will becomes critical path and
could delay delivery. Need by Mar
  • Detector- Want 1 month before camera

Budget Cost-to-Completion
  • With gt96 of major purchased equipment awarded,
have used 77 of budgeted reserve
  • Remaining 169K available for mishaps and
    schedule problems
  • Would pay for 5 mo schedule stretch at highest
    salary burn rate

10
Budget Prognosis
  • Positive deltas
  • spare CaF2 blanks 32,800. Will probably be
    recovered.
  • SAAO labor ForEx losses 41K (how is this
    accounted?)
  • NaCl and Fused Silica spares 8K
  • design subcontractor 30K
  • machining underestimates 20K
  • Negative Deltas
  • conservative PDR mechanism costs 9K
  • Lens Fabrication savings 25K

11
Concern Schedule
  • Optics delivery critical path
  • Mechanism waterfall easily disrupted
  • testing delayed until enough of control system is
    wired
  • Testing phase graduate student, postdoc (UW
    contribution)
  • Detector delivery has only 4 weeks slack
  • Etalon delivery has 2 months slack
  • Ship 23 Aug, 2004
  • Arrive Sutherland 1 Oct, 2004
  • Uncertain commissioning schedule

Some Questions
  • Filter complement
  • Etalon interference filters currently planned for
imaging only (85 mm dia), not spectroscopy (125 x
85). Some suggestion for subset of larger ones
for multislit applications (eg 510 nm region).
    Others?
  • No plan for interference filters for imaging
below 430 nm (etalon limit). Problem?
  • How will we commission if SALT does not have full
mirror complement? What is absolute minimum for
    turnover?
