5What Features and Technologies are Affected by
Migration?
- Some new W2K3 features are available without
upgrading the forest - Others require the W2K forest to be upgraded to
W2K3 - Still others require that every Domain Controller
in the forest be upgraded to W2K3
6New Features and Technologies
- Improved Replication
- Improvements to multi-value/linked value
replication between Domain Controllers and Global
Catalog servers - Improved replication topology generation
- Examples replication at attribute level and
granular replication of multi-valued attributes
such as group membership - Every Domain Controller must be W2K3
7New Features and Technologies
- Application Directory Partitions
- Active Directory information can now be
partitioned and replicated to only the necessary
Domain Controllers instead of forest wide - Requires a W2K3 forest
8New Features and Technologies
- Schema Enhancements
- InetOrgPerson support
- Deactivation of attributes and classes
- Requires a W2K3 forest
9New Features and Technologies
- Group Policy Enhancements
- More than 200 new settings
- Better management through resultant set of policy
and new GPO Management Console - The new settings require a W2K3 forest
- The better management does not require a W2K3
forest
10New Features and Technologies
- Restructuring and Renaming Forests
- Can rename both DNS domain name and NetBIOS
domain name - Looks very hard, requires coordination of all
Domain Administrators. Would we ever consider
doing this? - Every Domain Controller must be W2K3
11New Features and Technologies
- Many New Command Line Tools
- schtasks, netdom, netsh, GPResult, logman,
TypePerf, wmic, etc. - Available for Windows XP and Windows 2003 Servers
- Almost all can be used within a Windows 2000
forest
12New Features and Technologies
- Improved Administration MMC Tools
- Improvements to User and Computers, DNS Admin,
WINS, DFS - Can be installed on Windows XP and Windows 2003
Servers - Enhanced tools can be used to manage a Windows
2000 domain as well as a Windows 2003 domain
13New Features and Technologies
- Terminal Server Client Enhancements (Remote
Desktop Client 5.2) - Enhancements to color depth and resolution,
redirection of local resources, performance,
remote control of console, and mapping of local
keys to remote desktop - The enhanced client can be used on Windows XP,
Windows 2003, and even Windows 2000 to connect to
Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 Terminal Servers
14New Features and Technologies
- Terminal Server Enhancements
- TS Administrative Mode has been replaced by
Remote Desktop. - Enhanced TS administrator MMC
- GPOs can be used to configure TS farms
- Some enhancements (such as the MMC) do not
require a W2K3 forest - Other enhancements (such as the GPO management)
will not work until the forest is upgraded to W2K3
15New Features and Technologies
- Shadow Copy
- Creates a Journaling or Snapshot style file
system to allow easy document recovery - Clients can be Windows 2000 SP3, Windows XP and
Windows 2003 Server - Server must be Windows 2003 Server
- Does not require a W2K3 forest
16New Features and Technologies
- IIS 6.0 Enhancements
- Improved performance, security (locked down by
default), application isolation, deadlock
detection and recovery, and manageability (for
example, the metabase is now an XML file) - These enhancements do not require a W2K3 forest
17New Features and Technologies Summary
- Benefits of W2K3 without forest upgrade
- IIS 6.0
- Remote Desktop Client 5.2
- Adminpak tools
- Command line tools
- Shadow Copy
18New Features and Technologies Summary
- Benefits of W2K3 with forest upgrade
- Additional GPO features
- TS management through GPOs
- Application Directory Partitions
- Schema Enhancements
19New Features and Technologies Summary
- Benefits of W2K3 forest with all W2K3 DCs
- Improved Replication
- Domain rename (?!?)

21Migration Goals
- Allow early adopters to install Windows 2003
Domain Controllers as soon as possible - Ensure late adopters will not experience adverse
affects during the migration
22How do we balance these conflicting goals?
