Institutionalized Discrimination

• Minorities still suffer from institutionalized
  discrimination this results from unfair
  practices that are part of the structure of
  society and that have grown out of traditional,
  accepted behaviors

African Americans

• African Americans used to make up the largest
  minority group in the US
• The legacy of prejudice and discrimination that
  grew out of slavery affects African Americans to
  this day
• Practices and laws that segregated the races were
  institutionalized until the passing of civil
  rights legislation

• African American income is approximately 64 of
  that of whites

Latinos

• Latino refers to ethnic minorities from Latin
  America
• The Latino population is one of the
  fastest-growing minorities in the US
• Passed African Americans as Americas largest
  minority group
• About 60 of Latinos today are of Mexican descent

Native Americans

• Just over 2 million about 500 separate tribes
  and bands in the US
• Suffering from hundreds of years of
  discrimination
• Poverty is a major fact of life, especially on
  reservations
• About ¼ of Native Americans live on reservations
• Recently developed casino-type gaming
  establishments

Asian Americans

• 10 million Asians live in the US 4 of the
  total population
• Largest groups are from China, Philippines,
  Japan, India, Korea, and Vietnam
• Asian Americans have been successful because they
  have used the educational system for upward
  mobility
• The average SAT scores 45 points higher than the
  general high school population

• Over 42 of Asian Americans have completed four
  years of college, compared with about 26 of
  whites and 11 of Latinos

White Ethnics

• White ethnics are the descendants of immigrants
  from Eastern and Southern European nations,
  particularly Italy and Poland
