ASDAN - a Youth Award Scheme
  • ASDAN
  • is an educational charity that runs a number of
    programmes and awards for those of all abilities.
  • is developed and managed by teachers.
  • programmes offer awards at various levels and
    provide the opportunity for activities to be
    undertaken to support academic study, and give
    formal recognition to many other activities that
    are relevant to personal development.
  • emphasises developing skills and qualities that
    employers and higher education tutors as well as
    young people, parents and teachers regard as
    important practical attributes.

ASDAN status
  • ASDAN programmes and qualifications blend
    activity-based curriculum enrichment with a
    framework for the development, assessment and
    accreditation of key skills and other personal
    and social skills.
  • The emphasis is on negotiation, co-operation and
    rewarding achievement.
  • ASDAN is approved by DfES, QCA, ACCAC and CCEA.

ASDAN Programmes and Qualifications are
  • Relevant to a variety of contexts including
    schools, colleges, training provision, probation,
    voluntary and social services
  • Recognised by the Universities and Colleges
    Admissions Services (UCAS) in relation to HE
    entry
  • Acknowledged by over 140 Institutions of Higher
    Education which formally recognise their value
    for entry purposes
  • A way of delivering "self reliance, flexibility
    and breadth through fostering competence in key
    skills" (NTETs)

Bronze, Silver and Gold Challenge Awards
  • The ASDAN Award programmes progress through
    Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. (There is also a
    Universities Award aimed at 6th Form students).
    Each programme is designed to develop, assess and
    accredit Key Skills, and recognise personal
    achievements.
  • The booklets contain12 modules (topics or areas
    of interest).
  • To gain credits pupils need, with the help of a
    tutor, to choose sections which will be
    interesting and/or useful, and then complete the
    challenges required

  • Each Award programme contains a choice of
    challenges which will encourage pupils to become
    more skilled at
  • Improving own learning and performance
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving
  • Communication
  • Application of number
  • Information Technology
  • These skills are commonly known as Key Skills.
    They are highly valued by employers and
    institutions of further and higher education and
    will help students to make the most of employment
    and training opportunities.

What is CoPE?
  • The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE)
    is fully approved by AQA/ACCAC/CCEA and is
    available at 3 levels
  • It has evolved from the very successful and
    popular ASDAN (Youth and FE Awards and provides a
    formal accreditation of these Awards

CoPE Equivalence to GCSE
  • CoPE Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grade E
  • CoPE Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE grade B
  • CoPE Level 3 is allocated 70 UCAS points by many
    Universities (similar to A grade AS Level)

  • The Silver and FE Level 1 Awards provide the core
    to the CoPE certificate at Level 1
  • CoPE Level I is equivalent to GCSE Grade E
  • The Gold and FE Level 2 Awards provide the core
    to the CoPE certificate at Level 2
  • CoPE Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE Grade B
  • The Universities and FE Level 3 provide the core
    to the CoPE certificate at Level 3
  • The Bronze, FE Level Up and Challenge Awards
    provide a useful development and preparation at
    Level 1

Aims of CoPE
  • The aims of the qualification are to enable
    candidates to
  • develop and demonstrate a range of personal, key
    and employability skills leading to personal
    effectiveness
  • broaden experience and manage learning through
    the enrichment activities provided by the ASDAN
    challenges
  • Receive formal recognition and accreditation for
    these skills and experiences

CoPE Structure and Content
  • To achieve CoPE candidates must gain credits by
    completing challenges and providing evidence to
    demonstrate development in six areas, at the
    appropriate level.
  • Candidates who do not achieve the full
    qualification requirement of six units, will
    receive certification for units successfully
    achieved

Candidates will need to
  • complete a number of activities or challenges to
    develop skills and achieve the required number of
    credits
  • action plan, record achievements and review
    progress on challenges and skills development,
    with a tutor
  • present an organised Portfolio of Evidence which
    documents work for the challenges. There should
    be at least one example from each of the six
    skills units.
  • complete the Assessment Checklists which
    cross-reference evidence to meet the requirements
    of the qualification
