The New England Colonies

• Massachusetts
• Connecticut
• Rhode Island
• New Hampshire

Massachusetts

• John Endecott built Salem in 1628 on a bay they
  named Massachusetts.
• John Winthrop became the 1st governor where
  mostly Puritans settled.

• The Puritans were farmers and raised many
  livestock. They also traded their goods for
  other needed goods such as sugar.
• Whaling was an important way of life for
  Massachusetts.

Connecticut

• Connecticut was founded because many settlers
  were looking for better land.
• In 1633, Windsor was founded as the 1st permanent
  settlement.

• Thomas Hooker founded Hartford, along with many
  of his followers who were looking for a better
  government.
• In 1636, Windsor and Hartford united to form the
  Connecticut Colony.

Rhode Island

• Roger Williams wanted freedom from the Church of
  England. This led to the establishment of Rhode
  Island in 1635.
• His government gave people the freedom to follow
  any religion of their choice.

• In 1637, Anne Hutchinson and her family moved to
  Rhode Island too!
• Fishing, whaling, and trading important goods
  were the keys to Rhode Islands many successes.

New Hampshire

• David Thomson founded New Hampshires earliest
  settlement in 1620.
• Later on, many settlers left the other colonies
  looking for fertile land and moved into the thick
  woodland area of New Hampshire.

• In 1630, many settlers cut down the trees and
  shipped them to England. This settlement later
  became known as Strawberry Banke, due to the many
  wild berries growing in the area.

Middle Atlantic Colonies

• Delaware
• New Jersey
• New York
• Pennsylvania

Delaware

• The Dutch people and Delaware Indians were very
  prominent in forming Delaware.
• William Penn eventually became the owner of
  Delaware.

• The first General Assembly of Delaware met in
  1704.

New Jersey

• John Berkley and George Carteret were given New
  Jersey by the Duke of York, however, they chose
  to sell the land to anyone willing to settle in
  North America.

• This is how the Quakers began their first colony.
  
• The Quakers were looking for refuge from the King
  of England so this enabled them to find peace in
  North America.

New York

• New Yorks initial name was New Netherland. King
  Charles II of England did not agree with the
  Dutch colonists way of life.
• He declared war on Holland.

• His brother was allowed to take over the Dutch
  colonies.
• The English won the war and James, Duke of York,
  became the owner of what we now call New York.

Pennsylvania

• King Charles II gave a charter to William Penn
  because he owed Penns father a debt.
• This charter was the land that is now called
  Pennsylvania.

• However, Penn wanted to name the charter
  Sylvania, but the king wanted it to be called
  Pennsylvania, which was in honor of Penns father.

• Virginia
• Maryland
• North Carolina
• South Carolina
• Georgia

Virginia

• Virginia was the 1st permanent settlement in the
  south. It began in 1606 when the King granted
  the charter to the Virginia Company.
• Virginia was settled by the English.

• Virginia grew and prospered throughout the 1600s
  and early 1700s.
• By the year 1700, transportation improved
  throughout Virginia.

Maryland

• The Calverts, a family of wealthy Catholics,
  wanted to find a refuge for Catholics in North
  America.
• In 1628, Lady Baltimore found a nice place where
  the climate was mild and the soil rich.

• The colonial charter was signed in 1632.
• The colonys proprietor was Cecilius Calvert.
• Maryland was named in honor of Queen Henrietta
  Maria, the wife of King Charles I.

North Carolina

• The Carolinas were split into 2 separate colonies
  in 1721.
• This colony was known as a hilly colony and was
  made up of many small farms.

• North Carolina was governed by the Lords
  Proprietors who wrote a constitution in 1669.
• Their plan is known as the Fundamental
  Constitution of Carolinas

South Carolina

• In 1663, King Charles I decided to grant land
  for another colony. This colony was known as
  Carolina.
• It was split into 2 colonies in 1712.

• South Carolina was made up of many plantations.
• The main crops for these plantations were rice
  and indigo plants.

Georgia

• In 1732, the king gave James Oglethorpe and 19
  friends a charter to settle Georgia.
• Georgia was named after King George II.
• Oglethorpe was hoping this settlement would
  strengthen Englands land claims.

• Oglethorpe started the idea of debtors and
  offered 50 acres of land to each settler. An
  additional 50 acres were promised to each settler
  for each debtor they brought with them.
• Georgia became a royal colony in 1752, after the
  control was passed back to the king.
