Joel's Remarkable Prophecy of the Outpouring of
the Spirit
2
And it will come about after this that I will
pour out My Spirit on all mankind and your sons
and daughters will prophesy, your old men will
dream dreams, our young men will see visions. And
even on the male and female servants I will pour
out My Spirit in those days. (Joel 228-30)

Blessings of the Outpouring upon Unbelievers
  • The Spirit bore witness to Jesus as the
resurrected Lord leading sinners to believe in
    Him.
  • The Spirit convicted sinners of sin leading them
to repent and be baptized for the remission of
    sins.
  • The Spirit brought about a new birth in sinners
resulting in entrance into Gods family.

4
  • The Spirit wrote the law of God into the hearts
of new covenant members leading them to serve Him
    in a new way.
  • The Spirit liberated the sinner from the bondage
of Law and brought Him into the freedom of grace!

of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption
of Gods own possession, to the praise of His
    glory. (Ephesians 113-14)

Seals in Biblical Culture
  • Seal conveys the idea of putting a mark or
stamp on something to establish its authenticity
or to identify it as belonging to someone.

17
Ephesians Sealed by the Spirit
  • So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and
are of Gods household, having been built upon
the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in
whom the whole building, being fitted together is
growing into a holy temple in the Lord in whom
you also are being built together into a dwelling
of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 219-22)

18
Ephesians Sealed by the Spirit
  • Do not grieve the Spirit by which you were
sealed for the day of redemption (Eph. 430).

19
Corinthians Sealed by the Spirit
  • Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and
anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave
us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. (2
    Corinthians 121-22)

20
Background for Pauls statement
  • We know that both Paul Timothy had received the
    outpouring the Spirit
  • you were all made to drink of one Spirit (1
    Cor. 1213).
  • You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed
Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how
He went about doing good, and healing all who
were oppressed by the devil for God was with
    Him. (Acts 1038)

21
Corinthians Sealed by the Spirit
  • Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and
anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave
us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. (2
    Corinthians 121-22)

22
Romans Sealed by the Spirit
  • For you have not received a spirit of slavery
leading to fear again, but you have received a
spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out,
Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself bears witness
with our spirit that we are children of God,
    (Romans 815-16)

23
Galatians sealed by the Spirit.
  • And because you are sons, God has sent forth the
Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba!
    Father! (Galatians 46)
  • Does He then, who provides you with the Spirit
and works miracles among you, do it by the works
of the Law or by hearing with faith? (Gal. 35)

24
The Holy Spirit assured them that the inheritance
God had promised to them would be given to them!
25
Pledge to the Ephesians
  • In Him, you also, after listening to the message
of truth, the gospel of your salvationhaving
also believed, you were sealed in Him with the
Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge
of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption
of Gods own possession, to the praise of His
    glory. (Ephesians 113-14)

26
Pledge to the Ephesians
  • And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom
you were sealed for the day of redemption.
    (Ephesians 430)

  • The word pledge translates arrabon, a Greek
word conveying the idea of a prepayment, down
    payment, earnest

28
Pledge to the Corinthians
  • Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and
anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave
us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. (2
    Corinthians 121-22)

29
Pledge to the Romans
  • The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God, and if children,
heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with
