Title: Joel's Remarkable Prophecy of the Outpouring of the Spirit
1Joel's Remarkable Prophecy of the Outpouring of
the Spirit
2And it will come about after this that I will
pour out My Spirit on all mankind and your sons
and daughters will prophesy, your old men will
dream dreams, our young men will see visions. And
even on the male and female servants I will pour
out My Spirit in those days. (Joel 228-30)
3Purpose of the outpouring upon the disciples the
apostles made
4The Result of the Outpouring on Believers
- Some gifts were revelationary (assisting the
knowledge of truth) - Some gifts were confirmatory (assisting the
belief of truth)
5What blessings did these gifts produce?
6The outpouring of the Spirit bore witness that
they were Gods children (a seal).
7The outpouring of the Spirit assured them that
the inheritance God had promised to them would be
given to them (an earnest).
8The outpouring of the Spirit guided them in
worship!
9- What is the outcome then? I shall pray with the
spirit and I shall pray with the mind also I
shall sing with the spirit and I shall sing with
the mind also. (1 Cor.1415) - But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your
most holy faith praying in the Holy Spirit
(Jude 20)
10- And do not get drunk with wine, for that is
dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making melody with
your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 518-19)
11The outpouring of the Spirit gave them
instruction in the absence of a full revelation
of Gods will.
12Leading by the Spirit
- For all who are being led by the Spirit of God,
these are sons of God. (Romans 814) - But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
under the Law. (Galatians 518)
13Objective not subjective
- But one who prophesies speaks to men for
edification and exhortation and consolation. (1
Corinthians 143)
14Application necessary
- But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not
carry out the desire of the flesh. (Galatians
516) - And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom
you were sealed for the day of redemption.
(Ephesians 430)
15Incentive to holy living
- Or do you not know that your body is a temple of
the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from
God, and that you are not your own? For you have
been bought with a price therefore glorify God
in your body. (1 Corinthians 619-20)
16- Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and
that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man
destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him,
for the temple of God is holy, and that is what
you are. (1 Corinthians 316-17)
17Need for apostolic guidance
- But in my opinion she is happier if she remains
as she is and I think that I also have the
Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 740) - If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual,
let him recognize that the things which I write
to you are the Lords commandment. (1 Corinthians
1437)
18The outpouring of the Spirit gave assurance of
the truth to the NT congregations.
19Certain Knowledge
- But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and
you all know. I have not written to you because
you do not know the truth, but because you do
know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who
is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is
the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who
denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 220-22)
20Gods presence
- And the one who keeps His commandments abides in
Him, and He in him. And we know by this that He
abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
(1 John 324)
21The outpouring of the Spirit assisted the church
in reaching unbelievers.
22Tongues Unbelievers
- So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who
believe, but to unbelievers but prophecy is for
a sign, not to unbelievers, but to those who
believe. (1 Corinthians 1422)
23Prophecy Unbelievers
- If therefore the whole church should assemble
together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted
men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that
you are mad? But if all prophesy, and an
unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is
convicted by all, he is called to account by all
the secrets of his heart are disclosed and so he
will fall on his face and worship God, declaring
that God is certainly among you. (1 Corinthians
1423-25)
