  • Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructures
Developing Building Blocks for Electronic Devices
  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and semiconductor
nanowires have attracted much attention in recent
years not only for their small dimensions and
unique morphologies, but also for their potential
applications in various technologies. Since their
discovery in 1991 by Iijima and coworkers, carbon
nanotubes have become one of the most popular
materials in nanoscience and nanotechnology and
have been investigated by many researchers all
over the world. Many potential applications of
carbon nanotubes and nanowires have been
proposed, largely based on theoretical and
    experimental results, including conductive and
    high-strength composites energy storage and
    energy conversion devices sensors field
emission displays and radiation sources hydrogen
    storage media and nanometer-sized semiconductor
    devices, probes, and interconnects.
  • After more than ten years of rapid development
promoted by a worldwide research effort, carbon
nanotube and nanowire research has reached a
phase in which the basic concepts have been
    explored, and the technological promises
outlined. However, in order to fully exploit
    these promises, major breakthroughs, especially
in the area of nanotube and nanowire materials
science, must be achieved before the real
technological application of carbon nanotube and
nanowire devices can be realized. In this
presentation, the development of carbon nanotubes
    and semiconductor nanowires including controlled
    synthesis, structural characterization,
    electronic manipulation, and potential
applications in relation to the existing problems
will be reviewed. A comparison of the research
results of the authors group with those reported
by others is discussed. The progress and
challenges of this study will be addressed.
