Analysis and Synthesis of national health data at
WHO/SEARO (Flow Feedback)
Data source
Consolidated feedback in Regional perspective
3
Evolution of NHIS(s) in SEAR countries
4
Primary sources of data in the countries
  • Vital events registers
  • Routine health service records
  • Epidemiological surveillance
  • For notifiable infectious diseases
  • For other infectious diseases such as
    Mal,TB,HIV/AIDS
  • Disease registeries such as for cancer
  • Sample surveys such as DHS
  • Population and household censuses
  • Others
  • Income and expenditure surveys
  • Health care financing and health insurance
  • National Health Accounts
  • Health System Responsiveness and
  • Health state surveys

Data source and its producers

Regional issues and challenges
  • Ministries of Health in SEAR countries do have
health information teams to oversee directly or
indirectly the operations of the health related
data recording and reporting mechanisms that may
have been established in the country.
  • However, countries have not been able to use this
data effectively for policy debate and
    decision-making due to
  • Data collection systems are overloaded with
details which may not be required for policy
    decision making.
  • Weak linkage in data transmission from one level
    to next
  • Required data is not available in a timely
manner. Often times it is incomplete and thus not
    usable for evidence-based action.
  • Weak feedback mechanisms.

7
Regional issues and challenges (continued)
  • Organizational culture which values and
    encourages analytical thinking is lacking.
  • NHIS are often found not adequately equipped with
global tools techniques of data analysis.
  • Appropriate tools for transforming data into
information for decision-making are not always
    applied properly.
  • Disaggregated data are often not available in the
form required by programme managers for day to
day decision-making at the point of delivery of
    health service.
  • Existing human resources are not sufficiently
trained for applying the latest analytical tools
and methods to synthesize information for
    decision making
  • Health information systems are not well equipped
    for emergency preparedness and vulnerability
reduction. Therefore, not responsive enough to
help contain natural disasters and emergencies.
  • Lack of capacity (human and other resources)
