Title: ART AND ARCHITECTURE SUBJECT HEADINGS:
1ART AND ARCHITECTURE SUBJECT HEADINGS Changes to
LCSH
2You may have noticed some changes in LC subject
headings for art and architecture. This is a
brief introduction to the changes. I have changed
most of the art headings in LUIS and am working
on the architecture ones.
3Art headings used to differ from standard subject
heading order in that chronological subdivisions
came before geographic subdivisions. LC usually
assigned a pair of subject headings to works
about an art form in a particular place during a
particular century Examples Drawing,
American. Drawing y 20th
century z United States.
Painting, French z France z Paris.
Painting, Modern y 19th century z France.
These headings now follow the
standard order of geographic subdivisions before
chronological subdivisions. Only one subject
heading is assigned. Examples Drawing,
American y 20th century.
Painting, French z France z Paris y 19th
century.
4Please keep an eye out for this in your BAM
reports. CLARR will clue you in that an older
form of heading is no longer valid.

22Please note Unlike art headings, a subject
heading for architecture qualified by nationality
is only supposed to be used in the case of
architects of that nationality working outside
their countries. Example Architecture, American
z Japan z Tokyo is used as a heading for a
book about Frank Lloyd Wrights Imperial Hotel in
Tokyo (see next slide). A book about buildings by
American architects built in the U.S. in the 20th
century would have a heading of Architecture z
United States y 20th century
