Compositing

• Professional animators often set up complex shots
  as composites. That means the shot is rendered in
  several different passes.
• Huge complex scenes can become cumbersome to
  load, edit, and save.
• Rendering one element or layer of a shot is much
  faster than rendering the entire shot again.
• Most of Mayas particle system effects require
  separate hardware rendering and compositing to
  the rest of the scene later.

Using Compositers

• Most compositers use a timeline that progresses
  from left to right.
• The top layer in the timeline overlays the second
  layer. The bottom layer is the background plate.

Alpha Channel

• You can have Maya render objects with mask (known
  as alpha) channels included.
• The alpha channel is a grayscale mask image, with
  black signifying transparent, white signifying
  opaque, and the 254 gray levels in between
  defining levels of semi transparency.

• Render Globals Render Layer/Pass Control

• Turn on either Enable Render Layer Passes or
  Enable Global Passes to display the spreadsheet
  which provides access to the passes, Beauty,
  Color, and Shadow, for the appropriate layers.
• When Enable Global Passes is turned on, only one
  layer, the Global Layer, is available.
• When Enable Render Layer Passes is turned on, all
  layers are available.
• Beauty Produces a complete rendering of all the
  components. This is the default.
• Color Produces only the color component of the
  image. No shadow information is produced.
• Shadow Produces only the shadow component of the
  image. No color information is produced.

Starting a Career in Animation

• In general they hire only artists who can begin
  producing on the first day.
• Get apprentice work any way you can. Work for
  free at first, if necessary, and find clients
  from any market that would benefit from
  animation
• Dont miss deadlines. Dont commit to deadlines
  you are likely to miss.
