    2003
  • Tutorial
  • Chapter 15 in Maya 4.5 Fundamentals

3
Learning Objectives
  • Troubleshooting slow renders
  • Batch rendering
  • Compositing
  • Alpha Channel
  • Render Layers

4
Troubleshooting slow renders
  • Render Global Setting
  • Resolution Large images take longer to render
    than small images.
  • Antialiasing Quality Use fast, low quality
    antialising mode for testing
  • Raytraced Shadows If the raytraced shadow must
project through many small overlapping objects,
    it will decrease rendering speed.

5
Troubleshooting slow renders
  • Object Attributes
  • All NURBS surfaces must be tessellated to
polygons before the renderer can work with them.
  • You can adjust tessellation levels in the
    Attribute Editor

6
Tessellation Levels
Triangle Count 1280 U Division Factor 0.1 V
Division Factor 0.1
Triangle Count 16744 U Division Factor 3.0 V
Division Factor 3.0
7
Troubleshooting slow renders
  • Material Types
  • EnvFog, LightFog, Particle Cloud, Volume Fog,
    Volume Shader
  • These effects are very slow to render.

8
Troubleshooting slow renders
  • Camera Effects
  • Depth of Field Everything is in perfect focus.
You can set the camera to produce depth blurring
but it will add render time.

9
Batch Rendering
  • Render Current Frame
  • Render Globals to cover a range of frames, and
then use the Render Batch Render option to
    render the entire sequence
  • When batch render mode begins in Maya, the
rendering starts in the background and you can
    continue to work

10
Batch Rendering with the Command Prompt
  • You can build 12 different scenes during the day
and render all of them during the night.
  • Standalone Renderer If you look in your Maya\bin
folder, youll see the file Render.exe
  • Using MS-DOS Prompt you can render your file.
  • Render filename.mb

Batch Rendering with the Command Prompt
12
Batch Rendering with the Command Prompt
  • You can override the settings stored in an .mb
or .ma file by using this format.
  • render ltoptiongt filename.mb
  • render x 512 y 512 cam persp im test of sgi
    filename.mb
  • You can render multiple files in one go by using
    .bat batch file.
  • render x 640 y 480 cam persp im testA
    filename1.mb
  • render x 800 y 600 cam TopCam im testB
    filename2.mb
  • render x 320 y 240 im testC of tga
    filename3.mb
