Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing
  • There are two parts to this unit
  • Addition and subtraction of force vectors.
  • Tension and extension of materials.

3
Forces
  • Forces are vectors because they have both force
    and direction.
  • In order for an object to remain at rest, all
forces must be balanced, the object is in
equilibrium it has no resultant force acting on
    it.
  • In climbing, there are normally several different
forces acting on a climber, all working in
different directions. The climber must balance
these forces perfectly to remain on the rock.

4
Adding forces
  • Forces can be added together mathematically or by
    using diagrams.
  • Mathematically, we would write R d1 d2 where
R is the resultant and d1 dn are the component
    forces.
  • Because both direction and magnitude are
involved, diagrams are a much easier way to
    Understand the forces involved.

5
Vector Diagrams
  • To use diagrams, we draw each force arrow with a
length proportional to the size of the force.
  • We can then draw the force arrows joined
together, head to tail, and measure the direction
and magnitude of the resultant. These diagrams
    are called Vector Polygons
