Metal Doors
  • Hollow metal doors are made with 20, 18, or 16
    gage face sheets in thicknesses of 1 3/8" and 1
    3/4".
  •  Available with small vision lites, half glass,
    full glass, louvered, and flush.
  •  Door swing left hand, right hand, LHR, RHR
  •  Fire-rated doors certain door locations require
    a fire rating for the door and frame. C Label
    for 3/4-hour rating, B Label for 1 1/2 to 2
    -hour rating and A Label for 3-hour rating.

Door Frames
  • Steel frames are the most common type door
    frames and are available in 14, 16, and 18 gage.
  • Frames are made in various widths (profile) to
    suit the thicknesses of the walls to which they
    are mounted (4 3/4", 8 3/4",..).

Window Proposals
  • When checking proposals for the windows on a
    project, make a note of
  • whether the glass or other glazing is included
  • where delivery will be made
  • whether installation is done by the supplier
  • whether all the accessories are included
    (mullions, screens, sills, etc.)
  •  The job may be bid by the SF, or LF of frame, or
    a lump sum.

Window Accessories
  • Glass - unit is SF, note thickness and type
  • Glazing - setting of whatever material is
    installed in the frames (glass, metal, plastic
    laminates, stone). Cost depends on the total
    amount involved, size and quality of the material
    to be glazed, and the type of glazing method.
  • Screens - painted or galvanized steel, plastic
    coated fiberglass, aluminum, or bronze. Cost
    depends on type and size.

  • Hardware - locking devices, handles, and hinges
    made of stainless steel, zinc-plated steel,
    aluminum or bronze. Cost is per unit.
  • Weatherstripping - vinyl, neoprene, metal
    flanges and clips, and adhesive-backed foam.

  • Mullions - vertical bars that connect adjoining
    sections of frames. Takeoff in LF with a note as
    to thickness, finish, and color.

  • Sills - the bottom member of the frame made of
    stone, brick, precast concrete, tile, metal, or
    wood. Takeoff in LF with a note on the type,
    width and thickness.
  • Flashing- may be required at the head and sill
    of the frame. Check to see who buys the flashing
    and who is supposed to install it.

Hardware
  • Hardware costs add considerably to the cost of a
    door.
  • Rough hardware comprises the bolts, screws,
    nails, small anchors required for installation of
    the doors and frames.
  •  Finish hardware (hinges, door closing devices,
    locks and latches, locking bolts, kickplates) is
    scheduled in the specifications or on the
    drawings. Review the door schedule in conjunction
    with the specifications.

Types of Glass
  • Plate glass- regular, gray, low E-glass, and
    tempered.
  • Wire glass- where fire-retardant and safety
    characteristics are required.
  • Patterned glass- used for decoration or
    providing a degree of privacy.
  • Insulating glass two sheets of glass to
    increase sound and heat insulation.
