5World Wide Oil Production
A refining distribution from a barrel of oil
- Current WW oil consumption is approximately 90
million barrels per day. - More than 80 of a barrel of oil goes into the
production of liquid fuels.

- Sample contains between 2 - 4 million dirt
particles greater than 4 microns in size
8How clean should fuel or oil be?
Cleaned ISO 14/13/11
Un-cleaned ISO 22/20/18
- Bulk Target Cleanliness levels
- Fuel ISO 14/13/11
- Hydraulic Transmission Oils ISO 16/14/11
- Engine and heavy duty gear oils ISO 18/16/13
9Test dirt required to contaminate to a
cleanliness level of ISO 22/21/18
100 gallons 0.25 oz
1000 gallons 2.5 oz
10,000 gallons 1.5 lbs

13S3, FDP provide filter contaminants
14Benefits of Inorganic Fibers
- More pores for higher dirt capacity
- More pores for lower differential pressure
- No chemical reactions or swelling
- Higher temperature resistance
- No shelf life limitations.

18Operating filters in series
Standard beta values cannot be used because the
particle size distributions of the contaminant
are not comparable to standard conditions. The
actual results can be opposite from the expected
results because the fine filter is deprived of
the coarse particles it needs to develop a cake

one
20How to turn high efficiency filtration into low
efficiency filtration and extend filter life

ESD is an Industry Problem
21Designing a bulk filtration program. What are
some design constraints?
- Make filtration scaleable and modular in design
- Standardize designs, components and elements for
a global supply product platform - Meet typical field flow and pressure ratings
- Meet WW fuel and lubricant compatibility needs
- Minimize ESD damage at high flows
- Reduce installation and freight costs
- Reduce service time and service equipment costs
- Reduce fuel nationalization and spillage
- Improve existing filtration performance and
efficiency
22Modular design vs. competition
Donaldson Cost 4,000 Service time 10
minutes Typical operating cost 0.25c to 1c per
gallon
Typical competition Cost 35,000 Service time
2 hrs

32What can a bulk fuel filtration system be worth
- Example
- A Gold Mine using 24 Haul Trucks with an average
overhaul life of 14,000 hours. - Typically these trucks required mid life injector
overhauls at 7000 to 8000 hours at a cost of
1000 per cylinder. - New fuel supply was heavily contaminated
typically in excess of ISO 22/21/18 cleanliness
levels, the on vehicle filtration was a high
efficiency fuel filter. - The decision was made to fit high efficiency fuel
filtration and high efficiency air breathers on
the bulk tanks. - Following the changes, over an average running
period for the 24 trucks of 20,000 hours there
were only 16 injector overhauls required,
equating to one injector every 35,000 hours of
engine operation. - Net savings over the fleet exceeded 300,000
- Additional savings not included in the
calculations were production up-time, potential
fuel savings and reduced emissions. - A 5,000 filtration investment can yield a
300,000 cost saving
