  • I like creating art because I can focus and not
think about anything else. I think art is one of
the ways people can express how they feel and
    show their thoughts

34
HEALING
Students in Minnesota respond to a huge flood
by the Red River.
35
  • If there was one thing I liked it would be
color. I can mix the colors and make as many
textures and colors as I want. I love how the
colors are limitless and I love that our school
provides teachers to help improve our artwork.
No art work is terrible it is always creative in
    its own way.

EXPLORING SELF
  • Students in Maryland begin with the metaphor of
    Book as Self.
  • The cover of the book is designed to represent
    their outer self.
  • The inside cover is designed to represent their
    inner self.

47
The I Am poem format aids in the development of
the inside cover.

EXPLORING SELF
Self Portrait Ink I am often told to be smart,
or athletic, or good at the cello. I feel like I
must work harder to be good enough, but when I
build or draw, all of that pressure goes away. I
can just be for a little bit and know I am okay
just the way I am.
52
EXPLORING SELF
  • Sheets of acetate are used for monotype print
    self-portraits. Students made colored pencil
drawing of a favorite place or activity. The
leftover acetate is then layered over the image
    to create a Double Self-Portrait.

53
EXPLORING SELF
54
EXPLORING SELF
  • Personal clay totem pole.
  • We talk about totem poles, what they are made of
and what they represent.  The students then
create a personal totem pole.  They can choose a
theme of something they like or just make it all
    about themselves.

55
EXPLORING SELF
personal symbol necklaces created in clay
56
EXPLORING SELF
  • Students in Maryland created Metaphoric Self
    Portraits

57
EXPLORING SELF
  • Students in Illinois create expressions of
themselves with the use of symbols or objects
that reflect their interests, hobbies, or hopes
    as a kaleidoscope design.

58
  • Art is made of love, heart, creation and
feelings, you go deep inside to find an artist of
beautiful creation. A creation from an artist
isn't just a drawing, or a painting but a feeling
or a thing that lives inside. Art is creations
from people's hearts. Art brings out personality
and love. Art is the feeling of Joy.

ADVOCATING
  • The Art Through the Generations exhibit brought
together K-12 and community artists of all ages
    in Lacey Township, NJ.

64
ADVOCATING
  • As an art educator your responsibilities extend
beyond the classroom. Advocating for art, for
your students and for your program is important.
  • Youth Art Month is an amazing program that will
support your efforts and use them on the state
    and national levels.

65
  • I like art because art is there and there are
no rules. Just draw what I think. Art is fun
and it sets me free. Art is a way to find my
style and dreams. Art is my life.
