  • The middle school is recognized as the bridge
between elementary and high school. The planks
in this bridge consist of an interdisciplinary
team organization with a flexibly scheduled day
a guidance program, including an advisory plan
an exploratory program curriculum focused on
    personal development, continued learning skills,
and basic knowledge areas varied and effective
    instructional methodologies continued
    communication between students, parents, and
    teachers.
  • -William Alexander

  • Personal needs of middle school students can be
summarized with three words security, support,
and success. While young adolescents often seem
self-assured, the reality is that most of them
need adults to create an environment where they
feel supported, secure, and are provided
    opportunities to be successful.
  • -John Van Hoose and David Strahan

17
Interdisciplinary Team Approach
  • There will be three sixth grade teams.
  • Each team consists of teachers who share a common
    group of students.
  • Team classes and student lockers will be in the
    same hallway.
  • Common planning time allows teachers to
    coordinate interdisciplinary units, field trips,
consistent rules and expectations, team meetings,
    and parent conferences.
  • Teachers also meet with other grade level
department area colleagues twice a week in
    Professional Learning Communities.

18
Student Resource Time
  • Promotes a supportive, nurturing environment to
meet unique needs of individual students.
  • Students are assigned a faculty advisor with whom
they meet with at the end of each day.
  • Provides time for the Advisory Program, Response
    to Intervention, character education, club
    meetings, and study hall.
  • Provides students with a consistent adult
    connection.

19
The Passport A Key to Success
  • The passport will serve as the students daily
agenda and should be filled out each period to
    keep track of assignments.
  • The passport will also serve as a hall pass when
    students leave the classroom.
  • Finally, in past years, the passport has also
served as the student handbook. This year,
however, the Corporation has decided to publish
all handbooks online only in an effort to
conserve. Be sure to go over this with your
child to find answers to many questions.

20

in middle school is effective parent-school

  • Parent-Teacher Conferences in the fall
