maintain an active honors and award program
4Deputy Director-Honors and Awards
- General Duties
- Advise and assist membership and section officers
with submissions of nominations for membership
upgrades. - Communicate with Section Honors and Awards
Officers as often as possible. If there is no
Honors and Awards Officer, maintain a meaningful
and continuing liaison with the Section Chairman
and other appropriate individuals. - Collect and disseminate information on National
and Regional honors and awards activities that
may be useful to local Sections in formulating or
improving their local honors and awards programs.
- Encourage nominations for Section awards and AIAA
Awards. Plays a key role in nominations for the
Engineer of the Year (EOY) Award and in
presentation of the Region's EOY candidate at the
appropriate AIAA Honors and Awards Committee
Meeting. - Convey information from the AIAA Honors and
Awards Committee meeting to the Regional and
Section leadership. Communicate Regional and
Section activities and concerns to the AIAA
Honors and Awards Committee. - Participate in the Regional Leadership
Conference.
5Section Honors and Awards Officer
- Responsible for promoting and recognizing
excellence within the Section. - Plays a key role in the Sections annual awards
ceremony or special Section meeting honoring
Section member accomplishments. - Honors and Awards activities may vary from
section to section according to section size. - To do an effective job, it is suggested that the
Section Honors and Awards officer establish an
Honors and Awards subcommittee, and work closely
with the Section Chair or newsletter editor.

7Promote Advancements in Membership Grade
- (Covered in a previous RLC session)
- A combination of activities is the best way to
handle this task. - Put reminders in the newsletter.
- List membership upgrade criteria in your Section
newsletter, along with nomination and reference
deadlines. - Contact eligible members, and encourage them to
upgrade their membership status. - Coordinate the completion of an upgrade packages
for the worthy candidates. Once the members are
upgraded, recognize the members in the Section
newsletter.

9Recognize Section Members
- Certificate of Appreciation - At the end of
their terms or at other appropriate times,
recognize your Section chair, officers, and other
members who have demonstrated hard work and
dedication to your Section. AIAA Headquarters
has blank certificate paper available upon
request. - Anniversary Awards - Every year, AIAA
Headquarters sends the Section chair names of the
members who have been AIAA members for
25-40-50-60- or 70 years. The appropriate
membership certificate and pin are sent directly
to the member. - Special Service Citation - Nominate exceptional
volunteers for their contributions of time and
effort, which have substantially and uniquely
benefited a Section, Region or student branch
during the Section year. All Special Service
Citations must first be approved by RAC, then by
RSAC. - Be sure to recognize recipients at your annual
awards ceremony, special section meeting, or
other appropriate activities.
10Nominate A Section Member For AIAA Technical and
Major Awards
- It is suggested that periodically the Section
Honors and Awards Officer and subcommittee
brainstorm possible candidates and complete the
nomination process. - Over 75 awards can be found at

Bulletin and at http//www.aiaa.org/content.cfm?p
ageid290. - If a section member is selected to receive the
award, AIAA Headquarters will notify the Section
honors and awards officer and Regional Deputy
Director. - Announcement of the award should be published in
your section newsletter. Consider notifying your
local newspaper and the recipients industry
publication to obtain local coverage.
11Establish/Maintain Local or Section Awards
- A number of Sections have established their own
awards. These awards may consist of an Engineer
of the Year Award, a Distinguished Service Award,
a Technical Award, or they can be named in honor
of a pioneer in the industry or a dedicated
professional in the area.

13AIAA Distinguished Service Award
- Established in 1968 to give unique recognition to
an individual member of AIAA who has
distinguished himself/herself over a period of
years by service to the Institute. - Deadline 1 October
- Selection made by the AIAA President and Vice
Presidents. - Generally presented at the black-tie Aerospace
Spotlight Awards Gala
14AIAA Engineer of the Year Award
- Presented to an AIAA member who has made a recent
(within the past two years) individual
contribution in the application of scientific and
mathematical principles leading to a significant
accomplishment or event worthy of AIAA's national
or international recognition. - Nominations begin at the AIAA Section level or
may be made by any AIAA members, and are
submitted to the appropriate Deputy
Director-Honors and Awards and Regional Director
by 1 October. - The Deputy Director-Honors and Awards on behalf
of the appropriate region, presents their
candidate to the AIAA Honors and Awards
Committee, who selects the overall AIAA Engineer
of the Year. - Presented at a technical conference.
15AIAA Sustained Service Award
- Established in 1999, this prestigious award
recognizes sustained, significant service and
contributions to the Institute by members. - A nomination form and score sheet must be
submitted by 1 October along with a summary of
the nominees accomplishments and brief
biography. - Nominees for the award must score 100 points or
greater on the score sheet. Nominees are
evaluated on the following criteria Years as a
member, Student Chapter Service, Section and
Region Service, Technical Service, Publications
Service, Institute Service International Service,
as well as Special Assignments. - The Membership Committee recommends a slate of up
to 20 recipients each year, with endorsement by
the AIAA President and Vice Presidents. Awards
are presented at a technical conference or at a
Section awards ceremony.
