• Despite its reputation as the sick nation of
• Europe, Scots take part in a surprising
• variety of sports, sometimes very
• successfully.
• These range from sports which are common
• throughout the world to those which are
• associated strongly with Scotland.

• The most common sport in terms of
• participation is Football.
• Also played by many people is Golf.
• Sports strongly associated with Scotland
• would be Curling, Shinty and Highland
• Games.
• In terms of this project the obvious sport to
• consider is Rugby Union since it is played in
• all three countries and has particular common
  thread to it.

FOOTBALL

• Football has been played in Scotland for many
  years.
• The two major teams both belong to Glasgow,
  Celtic and Rangers.
• Both have had success in Europe with Celtic being
  the first British team to win the European Cup
  with a team entirely Scottish. The national side
  is supported strongly through good times and
  bad!!!

GOLF

• Scotland is traditionally seen as the origin of
  golf and indeed the governing body for golf the
  Royal and Ancient has its headquarters at St
  Andrews home of the most famous Open Championship
  course.
• Scotland has many council owned courses as well
  as private ones so lots of people play.

CURLING (the roarin game)

• Curling is played on ice.
• The idea is try to get a
• curling stone nearer
• to the centre of the
• target than your
• opponent after playing
• from the other end of
• the rink.

• The curling stones are very heavy and made of
  polished granite. Traditionally the best curling
  stones come from Ailsa Craig an island to the
  south of here. If the clouds ever lift you should
  be able to see it!!

• By twisting the stone as it leaves the curler it
  can be made to turn. This depends also on its
  speed which can be changed by sweeping the ice.
  The more you sweep the faster it goes.

SHINTY

• Shinty is a sport similar to hockey and hurling.
  It is played with a stick and a ball and can be
  very fierce.
• It is played mainly in the West Coast of Scotland
  and in the Highlands

• The stick is called a caman and the different
  shapes shown below are used depending where you
  play in the team. The idea is to score a goal in
  the opponents net.
• forward, midfield, defender, goalie.

HIGHLAND GAMES

• Highland Games originated out of competition
  between people who worked on the land to see who
  was the strongest.

• There are five basic events (although other
  events will take place)
• hammer throwing, tossing the caber, putt, weight
  over bar, weight for distance.
• Ardrossan has its own highland games in the
  playing fields across the road every year.

RUGBY

• Rugby is also played in Scotland. Traditionally
  it was a working mans game in the Borders but
  tended to be a middle class game elsewhere in
  Scotland.
• All three countries in this project have strong
  rugby ties and these are brought together in the
  team from Perpignan.

• Alongside the French players are Romanians
• Ovidiu Tonita and Marius Tincu, with Scot Nathan
  Hines. These players are all forwards.

Follow Up

• It would be a good follow up in the project if
  each nationality could write to their respective
  players asking for their thoughts and experiences
  about living and playing in different country and
  how the different culture has affected them (if
  at all)
• Perhaps the French could find out how their own
  players feel about playing with different
  nationalities.
