Grades
  • 7th 8th grade students will only receive 2
grades, one after each semester, instead of 4
quarterly. This is due to the block scheduling.
(The number of hours spent in Spanish class will
equal a quarter of instruction by the end of
    each semester. )
  • I will have the 7th and 8th grade students all
    year long.
  • You will receive an interim grade on your
progress report. Progress reports are actually
given at the end of the 1st and 3rd terms.
  • Remember, two terms in Spanish equal 1 regular
term. When students meet with me on MWF, their
grade is worth 60 of the total grade. When
students rotate to T/TH their grade is worth 40
    of the total grade.

8
Spanish Courses
  • I teach Spanish to 6th, 7th and 8th Grade
    students.
  • Spanish Exploratory is a 9-week course designed
to introduce Spanish to 6th graders
  • Spanish 1 is a 2-year course designed to prepare
students for high school Spanish I.

9
Spanish Courses
  • Students will earn 1 Carnegie Unit of high
school credit at the end of the 2-year course.
  • Seventh graders will cover chapters 1 through 4
and will take a semester exam at the end of the
    first year.
  • Eight graders will continue to cover chapters 5
through 8 and will take a comprehensive exam that
will include oral and listening comprehension at
    the end of the year.

My Goals and Expectations
  • For my students to develop a love for languages
and a tolerance and understanding of other
    cultures
  • To prepare my students to meet the bilingual job
demand for the 21st century work force
  • To balance grammar, writing, reading and
listening for my students to achieve the ultimate
    goal of communication!

How to Learn a Foreign Language 5 Keys to Success
1) Spend the time! By far the most important
factor is how much time you are immersed in the
language. The more time you spend with the
language, the faster you will learn. This means
listening, reading, writing, speaking, and
studying words and phrases. 2) Listen and read
every day! Read what you are listening to. Listen
to and read things that you like, things that you
can mostly understand, or even partly understand.
3) Focus on words and phrases! Build up your
vocabulary, youll need lots. Start to notice
words and how they come together as phrases.

How to Learn a Foreign Language 5 Keys to Success
4) Take responsibility for your own learning! If
you do not want to learn the language, you wont.
If you do want to learn the language, take
control. Do not wait for someone else to show you
the language, nor to tell you what to do. A
teacher cannot teach you to become fluent, but
you can learn to become fluent if you want
to. 5) Relax and enjoy yourself! Do not worry
about what you cannot remember, or cannot yet
understand, or cannot yet say. It does not
matter. You are learning and improving. The
language will gradually become clearer in your
brain, but this will happen on a schedule that
you cannot control. So sit back and enjoy. Just
make sure you spend enough time with the
language. That is the greatest guarantee of
success. September 5th, 2007 by Steve Kaufmann
