The Case For Mandatory Lighting Control
  • In the European Union, Lighting accounts for 26
    of the electricity consumption in nonresidential
    buildings1.
  • 26 equates to an electricity consumption of
    approximately 175TWh1 generating 75 Million
    tonnes2 of CO2 costing 14bn per annum3.
  • A minimum of 304 of the energy consumed by
    nonresidential lighting can be saved by using
    existing occupancy sensing technology to
    automatically turn off the lights when a space is
    unoccupied.
  • Legislation to mandate the use of this technology
    could achieve a reduction of 52TWh saving 4.2bn
    and 23Mt CO2, which is equivalent to 6.5 of the
    European Unions total Kyoto CO2 reduction
    commitment or 2.5 of the European Unions 20 20
    by 2020 commitment5.
  • These products give a payback of between one and
    three years.
