Title: Future European activities in Energy Efficient Lighting of Buildings

1
Future European activities in Energy Efficient
Lighting of Buildings Proposals for efficient
programmes and coordination.

Preliminary observations
  • In artificial lighting, European industry leads
the world regarding the performance of the
luminaire industry and the control technology. In
countries such as Germany, Netherland, or
Swizzerland the standards for efficiency are
quite high, but they are progressing all around
    Europe.
  • For indoor lighting, T5 fluorescent with
electronic ballasts represent the best light
source in terms of efficiency, with no real
potential of improvement for the next 20 years.

Preliminary observations  (continued)
  • Good news for energy conservation Halogen
spotlights will me replaced in the next 5 years
by LED sources, coming from the electronic and
computer industry. Danger Europe will probably
loose its leadership to Asian companies but
Philips, Siemens invest strongly on these
    technologies.Major potential for energy savings
will come from1) generalization of best
practice high quality, low power densities2)
turning lights off whenever it possible (in
relation to occupant needs, presence, and, above
    all, daylighting)

Brussels, February 8th
4
Type of activity needed 1) RD
  • Efficient and powerful task lighting using T5
    technology this should increase lighting
quality, offer more flexibility, and reduce
power densities in offices from 15W/m2 to below
10W/m2 or even below 8W/m2.Highly insulative
glass, to allow use of larger glazed areas and
    more daylighting.
  • Optimized solar shading techniques and their
    controls
  • (between glass panes?)
  • Deep daylighting techniques (Passive light
    guides, façade components)

Brussels, February 8th
5
Type of activity needed 2) Dissemination
  • Examples of very efficient and very sustainable
work place in offices. Below 70 W / person for
    electrical lighting power incomparison with
    200W/m2 current. Highly controllable, default
controls for energy savings. Industrialize the
    solution with office furniture manufacturer.
  • Propose demonstration buildings
  • Document the results
  • Involve major clients (banks, public
    organization,etc.)

Brussels, February 8th
6
Type of partnership needed
  • Academic performance targets, monitoring
    procedures, laboratory tests, occupant
    satisfaction, sustainability assessment
  • Industrial supply of products, increase
    performance, integration reduction of costs
  • Governmental health organizations, work
    legislation
  • Clients investors in the field of buildings
    (office / industrial, banks, governmental
    organizations)

Brussels, February 8th
7
Type of project
  • The efficient office space of the XXIth century
    sustainability (energy material), pleasantness
    (occupants), low cost (market integration).
  • Facade systems using as much natural radiation,
light and air and leading to less discomfort for
    occupants.
  • Roof systems using as much natural radiation,
    light and air
  • Building management systems using internet, and
    climatic ressources (satellites and ground
stations) ,to optimize energy efficiency of
    systems.
  • Coupling of LED and PV

Brussels, February 8th
8
Targets in Lighting
  • 6W/m2 office lighting, less than 6KWh/m2.year
    average
  • Workspace below 50 W
  • New LEDs with efficacy higher than 50 lm/W
  • Replacement of all compact fluorescent and
    halogen by LED (no moremercury)
  • Use of daylight for ambient lighting up to 70
    of needs
  • (map of Europe)

Brussels, February 8th
9
