  • All communication is either verbal or
    nonverbal...
  • Verbal includes all spoken language.
  • Nonverbal is body language, facial expressions,
    gestures, nonspoken vocalizations (laughter,
    groans, sighs, etc.) as well as time, touch,
    distance, objects

  • Meaning- assigned symbols
  • Vocabulary-word symbols in a particular language
  • Structure-the way the language is arranged
  • Grammar- rules that regulate a language
  • Sound- diction dialect of a language

  • Researchers claim that American women are more
    supportive, tentative, and emotionally expressive
    in their language than males, who are more
    direct, assertive, and fact oriented.

  • To discover the positive and negative aspects of
    using verbal language alone we are going to draw
    a picture as described by a volunteer.

  • You may ask them to repeat the instruction.

Verbal Language- can be broken down into levels
of usage
  • Formal- like at a city council meeting or a trial
  • Technical- associated with a particular
    profession, activity, or field
  • Standard- spoken by most of the knowledgeable in
    a specific language
  • Informal- used in casual situations close
    relationships
  • Colloquialisms
  • Slang
  • Ungrammatical- does not use expected standards of
    grammar

    interactions and beneficial relationships.

  • Subconscious- all of those gestures you do when
    you dont realize it
  • Contextual- depends on the situation surrounding
    the message sent
  • Ambiguous- open to interpretation, sometimes
    confusing
  • Cultural- depends on the origin or background of
    those communicating

  • In your table groups you will build something
    with the blocks in the envelopes.

    language that you send.
  • When you send a positive professional image you
    are more likely to gain employment, have gainful
    interactions with others, and build your own
    confidence.

  • Confidence- a strong voice and an attentive
    positive attitude
  • Poise- unhesitating speech and the ability to
    read a situation and react appropriately
  • Assertiveness- strong sense of purpose
  • Immediacy- approachable, friendly open

    appearance which can create that positive
    professional image.
  • Dress- professional vs. social situations-
    classic, clean, conservative
  • Grooming- hair, face, hands

Also included are facial expressions involving as
eye movement, mouth movement, tension
relaxation.

    impressions is the voice.
  • There are nonverbal cues given in the voice
    which, with practice, you can use to create that
    positive professional image.

    nonverbal language
  • Pitch- highness or lowness- relates emotion or
    maturity
  • Volume- ability to be heard- relates confidence
  • Tone- vocal quality- relates pleasantness and
    richness
  • Duration- rate tempo- relates ability to be
    understood interest of listener

  • There are certain nonverbal cues that come with
    your speech that support the messages that you
    send
  • Pauses Silence
  • Laughter
  • Other Vocalizations- sighs, whines, groans,
    throat clearing- also uh um which clutters
    speech

  • To practice noticing and interpreting nonverbal
    language, you need to set aside a period of time
    to watch someone.
  • Go to a public place between now and next class.
    (student center, mall, grocery store)
  • Choose one person to watch without them knowing
    you are watching them.
  • Make a list of the nonverbal messages they are
    sending to the person they are communicating
    with.
  • Be sure to include all areas appearance,
    kinesics, voice (if you can hear it).
  • Define their personality and desires based on
    their nonverbal language.
