  • Implications for Technology Integration

3
Genetic Epistemology
  • A genetic epistemologist is a scientist who
studies how we attain knowledge as we grow.
  • Piaget came up with his findings by spending much
    of his life around children.
  • Einstein called it a discovery so simple that
only a genius could have thought of it.

4
Four Stages of Cognitive Development
  • Piagets theory of development represents
constructivism, a view of cognitive development
as a process in which children actively build
systems of meaning and understandings of reality
through their experiences and interactions. -
    Slavin

5
Stage 1 - Sensorimotor
  • Ages Birth to 2 years
  • The childs cognitive process occurs through
motor activity by using their bodies and their
senses as they explore the world.
  • Teachers need to provide children with different
shapes, sizes, and colors for them to use so they
    can stimulate their senses.

6
Stage 2 Preoperational
  • Ages 2 to 7 years
  • Children can now use symbols such as the alphabet
    and numbers.
  • In the classroom, teachers need to encourage
social interaction and let the kids learn from
    each other.

7
Stage 3 Concrete Operational
  • Ages 7 to 11 years
  • Children are able to think logically, form
concepts, see relationships, and solve problems,
but as long as they involve objects and
    situations that are familiar.
  • Teachers should give students the opportunity to
perform tasks that involve what they are learning.

8
Stage 4 Formal Operational
  • Ages 11 to Adulthood
  • Children are able to think for themselves and
form their own ideas about the future and
    society.
  • Teachers should challenge the students ability,
but not to the point where the students get
    frustrated.

9
Biopsychosocial Development
  • Biopsychosocial Development is based on two main
    points
  • Assimilation where people take new information
in and fit it into their present way of thinking.
  • Accommodation where people change their
behavior or way of thinking to accept new ideas.

10
Implications for Technology Integration
  • Piaget would welcome the role of instructional
    technology into the school systems.
  • The use of technology will allow for children to
learn things on their own and become more
    involved in their education.
